I was wondering how necessary it is to preorder these laptops. I know that I won't see the first shipment if I don't, but is it possible that preorders will bleed over into later shipments? If I don't preorder now will I still be able to get one by July or August? I have never been involved in a notebook release before and am unfamiliar with the supply and demand situation. Thanks for any help!

I really want to know everyone's opinion on this, too, as I NEED to have mine by mid August.

Going back to college too? =P That's why I need mine!
Also, to be more specific, I want to order the G1S. It is perfect for me and I don't want it to slip through my fingers! -
It doesn't guarantee a notebook for sure, since the shipment number isn't disclosed. It's really hard to say, considering supply and demand.

lol santarosa laps are not like the ps3 or xbox.
I personally think its silly to preorder a laptop. Wait a week and do some footwork and save urself some money by making retailers compete against each other for your hard earned money.
Preordering only guarantees youve paid the highest price -

That is what I was comparing them to =P. I guess the demand would be lower as PC software is not exclusive per platform. I didn't know though, if the supply was lower and the same types of situations arise.
Thanks Mike! I will probably order mid June, hopefully here before Independence Day. -
Yeh, College for me I need to be up by August 17th but I can wait a little longer to order I figure if I order even late July I should hopefully be fine, just with little time to get used to the new system.
And yeh I was comparing it to PS3 and such as well, as I don't really know how fast new tech moves when it comes to laptops having never really followed this type of stuff before. -

If you don't mind my asking where are you attending?

Cornell University, and yourself?

Georgia Tech. I have a couple of good friends at Cornell. Tough school, but if you can make it through the first couple years you will come to love it.

I'm in much the same situation: need to have the laptop by mid-August, sooner if I can help it. I'm more worried about when Asus will release the model I want though. I'll worry about pre-ordering from retailers later if Asus even plans a refresh of the V1 by mid-summer. There isn't even any word out about it!
On the plus side, I hear the Asus retailers here all have extremely fast turnaround times ....on the other hand, check out that huge "How long did your T60 take to ship" thread in the Lenovo forums!
