I heard from some of ppl on the forum that there will be a $50-70 increase on the S96J prices starting 1st of june (tommorow).....i think it's cause asus just put on an extra year of warranty on their barebones...can anyone (esspecially resellers) verify this???

Asus doesnt handle barebone warrantys. Resellers do. And if you were to buy a barebone alone. There is a 1 year warranty on allof them. so i doubt it will go up.

Give them a call and ask them. I think it might be faster then waiting for them to reply to your thread.

I actually heard the same thing, but not sure if this still applies

Dunno about anyone else but we wont be having a price increase for atleast another week if ever. Well we had one for 10$ but nothing to do with intel or any other factors.

The clear answer is like this:

The bareboe warranty is done by Intel through intel IPD dealers, Intel announced 1 year warranty at the release time, but changed to 2 years very soon after that, for people already got it before the warranty extended to 2 years, just treat it as a free updrade deal, all S96J( barebone and optical drive ) will have 2 years, but the power adaptor and battery will be still one year only no matter when you buy. The prices from the distributors already increased, by CD$40.

Yah that's exactly what i have heard Danny, thanks for clearing that up :D.

40$ for 1 year extra warrantly on the barebone sounds ok to me, but what about those who want to upgrade the Yonah to Merom, would that void the warranty? or it wouldn't because it is a built on model?

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

Whatever you want to do, Intel just warranty the barebone, you can put in an apple pie if you feel like, as long as you clean it up before you send it in for service.

....and i thought asus (or intel)were smart....i mean this is really useless...most ppl buy their barebones and customize them from resellers who have their own warranty (ussually 1 year) on it and if u want to upgrade to 2 or 3 years u pay for it....so most barebones end users wont really benifit from the price increase unless the resellers lower their prices for the 2 year warranty option....i think it should have been offered as an OPTION for the users who want the barebones alone and that way they have the 1 year warranty from the reseller (or from asus/intel..depending on wether the reseller offers a separate warranty or not), and if they want it, a second year of warranty....
I know the price is still gr8, even after the $40 but i think it's just unneccesary!!

I agree scuba. So basically the warranty is different between asus barbones and the VBI barebone thing?

this 40$ increase is free money to them...they prolly calculated the estimated Revenue from 40$ is greater than the amount of RMA costs, which means they make more money and many customers will have peace of mind for 2 years, even tho they may not use the warranty.

    That's what i think.

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

hehe,i agree!, when i first entered the notebook world, i was surprised how the retailers acutally took care for everything, not the manufacturer... then the retailers would involve the manufacturers if needed.

As i said again, this 40$ hike looks like the manufacturer or intel's way of getting free money. =\

ohwell, these notebooks are still an amazing deal!

    Thanks,

    MysticGolem

You can see two different kinds of whitebox models from Asus, ACI models and VBI models, ACI-Asus compputer international, VBI-Verified by Intel, ACI warranty from Asus, VBI warranty from Intel, the currant models if start from S, like S96, S62, they are VBI, 2 year warranty from Intel, Z series, like Z62, Z96 are ACI models, one year from Asus, this way will benefit end users alot, because Asus has higher prices, now under the presure of low price VBI, Asus will lower the whitebox models prices, like the coming Z96J, amazing deal, the price is so low, I cannot even believe it.

Good job MilestonePC.com, this is perfectly stated.

You have to buy the S version (which is VBI) from an Intel IPD reseller who is your contact for the warranty. All VBI models from ASUS, Compal and Quanta will be designated by an S to start the model name and will have the 2 year warranty from Intel on the barebones, and independent warranties on the Intel processor (3 years) hard drive (3-5 years depending on the brand) and memory (1 year to lifetime depending on the brand). The AC Adapter and battery have one year warranties.

This warranty system is only for Verified by Intel models. So, the price increase that some resellers are adding to their VBI models is for going from 1 year to 2 years on the barebones. ASUS, Compal and Quanta have nothing to do with the warranty relationship with the user, that is strictly through your Intel IPD reseller and Intel.

So there is no overall warranty on the system? the barebones parts are covered by Intel, while the individual parts are covered by their respective manufacturers?

So what happens if suddenly my keyboard stops working --> Intel?

What if screen stops working? Intel?

What if the ram stops functioning? The ram's manufacturer (ex. Kingston) would come and repair it? Or I would have to remove the ram??

And lastly would their be documentation for the warranties on all the parts supplied with the laptop?

(side note--> How is the stock on s96js at Milestonepc.com?, If ordered this week, when would deilvery be by?

When is the latest the order can be placed so that the delivery is made by beginning of September?)

Also, is the s96j Merom compatible? Or no :S

Incorrect. Compal VBI models are EL80, EL81, GL30 and GL31, so it does not apply to all VBI models. So far, it has applied to ASUS and Quanta (SW1) VBI models.

Read the individual dealers warranty. Each dealer has their own,
