    I still don't get it.

Please, make a clear description of the problem in your native language, from start to bottom, and then translate it into English. Unless the problem is not clear to some extent at least, I don't think we can give good suggestions...

Makes pretty good sense to me. His USB thumb drive is no longer working on his W3J. It still works on other computers, but when he plugs it into the W3J, the computer crashes for some reason and he's not sure why.

I dunno how to help him though......

I think by #-E he means 'Windows Key + E' which is the shortcut for explorer.

So when he plugs it in and goes to Explorer his PC crashes.

I would check Device Manager and see if any devices are showing up as not functioning properly.

So is it recognized by the W3J at all? If so, without using explorer to actually browse within it, right click on the icon for the drive and try reformatting it. Note that doing so will erase anything on the drive so have a backup of anything important.

yes is it recognized by the W3J, i can see it in the safety remove hardware. I try reformate it but nothing, same problem.

When i pull the usb out, it says :

"The request could not performed because of an I/O device error"

Do you have some type of a program that might be automatically accessing the drive? It sounds like something is trying to and goes crazy when you pull it out. The same thing might be causing the Explorer crash, I suppose.

Try reinstalling the USB drivers from scratch (Remove, then reinstall). I can think of nothing else right now.

Did you uninstall the device driver itself?

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware Tab -> Device Manager Button -> Expand 'Disk Drives' -> Select USB Drive Device -> Right Click -> 'Properties -> Driver Tab -> Uninstall

Then remove the drive, reboot, and try inserting it again. Windows will re-install the driver.

You might also check that under the 'Properties' for the drive, on the 'Policy' tab, the radio button is set to 'Optimize for Quick Removal'. I don't know how that would affect things, but it's the default for USB drives.

I guess if you have System Restore on, you could try restoring to a restore point from before the problem started.

Ok, if it's fully recognized by other computers, plug it into one of them and reformat. Try Jumper's tip above and If it then does not work, try another USB mass storage device and see if it's an issue with the drive or the computer. If it's just this drive, RMA it with the manufacturer. I had a San-Disk which went a little crazy and they very efficiently sent me a replacement. They paid for shipping both ways and I got the new drive days later.

Well at least that's progress. It means (hopefully) something's gone wrong with the way Windows is handling USB devices. Again, try Jumper's suggestion of booting into safe-mode and if USB devices don't work after that, it's likely you'll have to reinstall Windows. Let us know what happens.

start -> run -> typin in 'msconfig' -> startup tab and start unchecking things/rebooting until the problem goes away. if you have a new problem appear, recheck the last thing you unchecked...
