I bought an Asus A8Fm in May last year and was reasonably pleased with its performance. But over the last three months, I've noticed that the lid or the upper cover of the LCD screen has started to split open coming from the hinges. I was actually blaming the hinges because it was a bit too tight for comfort but was horrified to see that as time goes on the split appeared to becoming worse. I intend to bring this later to a service center but is this normal for this model or have I just gotten a lemon? Is it ok to lubricate the hinges with oil so that it opens more easily? Would appreciate if reply can also be sent to my email [email protected] so I won't miss the answer. Thanks.

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Hinge problems with bezel cracks are a well-described problem with the A8 series around here, and some reports are that the problem can recur even after repair. Be sure to get it fixed before the warranty expires.

yeah, probably useful to check the A8 owner lounge.
I don't think anyone will send an email, you should just subscribe to the thread with email notification. -
I've had mine crack as well. I got it serviced twice without any hassles. Apparently, they have re-designed the hinges and I got mine replaced the second time with the new hinges. So far no problems and it's been about 4 months. The first time it started to fail within the first 2 months.
Hope this helps. -

I just picked up my A8Jm back from servicing today.
Even though my warranty was over, the guy still accepted it for the broken hinges.
This is my second time servicing because of that reason. If what Jazzario is correct, it would make sense...
According to the service receipt, my notebook was fixed with parts A8E-1A LCD COVER ASSY and A8E-1A TOP CASE COVER.
On the previous receipt, it was replaced with A8J-1A components.
Also, on the ASUS e-store, there is a note under the A8J-1A LCD Cover page, "1/09 Please use the following LCD cover as a replacement:
Name: A8E-1A LCD COVER ASSY
Item#: 13GNNW1AP030-1"
Definitely a different part than the A8J-1A LCD Cover ASSY that it was replaced with in April/07.
Now, we know that A8E is a recent revision but will it stand the test of time, or will it fail like the pitiful hinge mechanism previously?
