    Hey guys

I brought the ASUS A6Ja laptop, it's got the following:

    -T2300 Core Duo
    -1gb RAM
    -ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 (256mb)
    -Winxp Pro

And for some reason i can't seem to run HL2, it installs fine and it even loads up to the main menu of HL2 but when i try to run it (i.e Start new game) it freezes after loading up 5 bars......now i've been to the steam website and done all that other stuff they say (allow HL2 in the exceptions section) but it still isn't working.

Can anybody here help me with this?

    Thanks

I'm sorry man, mine worked out of the box, just check the usual, backround programs services and drivers. You might try reinstalling the game.

I second what they said above...if you can't get it figured out ask the guys (and gals?) in the gaming forum, they know everything....

Once you have all the newest drivers loaded, uninstall (as per AC) and try again.
Make sure you have all of the patches applied to the game and no other major programs running in the background.

If it's still doing that, you may want to play with some of the visual settings (ie...try setting everything to the lowest - JUST to see if there's an advanced technique tripping things up)...there's really no magic other than drivers and patches...etc. other than some down and dirty troubleshooting.

I know I had trouble playing F.E.A.R. on my V6j (game would crash while opening) because of one of the devices hooked up to my computer, that was the remote control for media stuff. Do you have any devices that it might not like?

probably a driver issue, or a driver issue, try all that and then reinstallation

ok well the catalyst driver 6.3 has just finished d/ling hopefully this will solve the problem........hopefully, oh i forgot to say that i have the HL2:GOTY edition (HL2: Game Of The Year) if that helps.

Edit: ok the first catalyst driver 6.3 file was corrupted...... =.=" have to redownload ANOTHER one..........

Edit 2: ok downloaded and installed Catalyst Driver 6.3........uhhhh am i suppose to do anything after i install it? because i have no idea how to use it.......i disabled overclocking.....should i turn that on or off? And it's HL2 i thought all the patches that were needed for that game come from the updates that steam gives you....

You dun need to do much after installing Catalyst, though overclocking should be disabled to be safe. And you're right Steam should give you everything unless the installation is corrupted, in the case which you should uninstall then reinstall.

I have no problem running HL2 on my A6J (mine came with Catalyst 6.3), so you should not too. Try again and let us know how it goes.

    Very strange stuff going on.

I must ask this question, I'm sorry, but I must...is it a retail copy or a pirated version?

I think he won't even be able to sniff the game if it's pirated, Steam pretty much ensures that.

You're really unlucky Orphen, it's hard to help you with unique problems like that lol. Do you play other games? Especially Steam games. Do they run fine?
