    Hi Guys,

I have an ASUS G1s A1 since two years ago. Recently the DVDROm in this laptop can only read few CD's. It certanly can not read cd containing data, yet it can read some DVD. I tried to clean the CDROM using the CD cleaner. Yet, it even can not read the CD cleaner.

It seems that it can read a DVD but can not read a CD. IT is little bit strange for me.

Could you please tell me what should I do to make this DVDROM working again for all kinds of CD (CD/DVD/etc)?

    Thanks for the information

This isn't an uncommon problem, it could be due to some kind of 3rd party drivers/filters you have installed, or it could be hardware-related, like a problem with the lens (it could also just be failing). You could try using a Live CD/USB like Ubuntu and try reading CDs that way (it would rule out a software/driver problem in Windows). You could also try flashing firmware onto the drive, and possibly uninstalling/reinstalling the drive using Device Manager.

    Thanks for the response ALLurGroceries

I am trying to use CD Windows (booatble). It works. From my very limited knowledge on computer, I assumed this is what you mean by a live CD, don't you?

I also already uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, yet the problem still persists. Iwill try to flash the firmware. Could you please tell me step by step how to do that?

So, it left me with the hardware failure? Do you know how to clean the lens without using the CD cleaner (that could not be read by the DVDROM)?

Just download and burn the ISO image. Specific instructions here. You can also use that ISO with Unetbootin if you want to use a USB stick/drive instead of CD. Then boot off of it and choose the first option which is called 'Try Ubuntu without making changes to my computer' (or something similar) and hit enter. It'll take a couple of minutes to load but then you should have a working desktop environment. If it gets that far off of the CD it is probably safe to say your hardware is working OK.

Sort of... that's fine really. If it can read the CD outside of the OS it's "working".

This is gonna be a bit of a problem, you need to hunt down firmware for the specific model of your drive. It won't come from ASUS -- be careful where you download from and scan for viruses. It's like any other firmware update -- just run the .exe and cross your fingers :)

Not sure how you came to hardware failure if the Windows installer CD will boot... It's probably some sort of driver issue or 3rd party software messing it up. You'll have to investigate that with looking at your installed programs, the details of the driver in device manager, and your startup applications, etc. The CD cleaner should just spin up, if it doesn't, maybe try it using the CD player function when the computer is off.
