I think this is right, if not, let me know! Anyway:

Are you trying to install the catalyst drivers for the actual 'cards'?

You have whats called a 'mobility radeon' x1600, I.E. the laptop version, that works with different drivers than the straight-up catalyst. As of right now I am fairly sure ATI doesn't release a generic driver set that works with all laptop models, you have to get branded ones... Which means your manufacturer has to release the driver update, which can be very slow.

    ATI MOBILITY LINK

Asus isn't officially supported on that list, but that ID program you can download should let you know if that driver update is for you.

Alternatively use the 'Omega' Drivers ( LINK HERE) which will update your drivers but may disable things like TV-out and some special functionality. They're unsupported, but if you need the new fixes, this should take care of it.

If by 'drivers from ati.com' you meant drivers for ATI desktop vga card... then what you experienced is not a problem... it's normal. You cannot use drivers for desktop vga card for your notebook.

To download the latest mobility catalyst driver (I believe the latest is version 6.10), go here http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/ (and save it in your browser's favorites, just in case.)

To download previous mobility catalyst drivers (6.9 and previous versions), go here http://www.3dnews.ru/download/drivers/ati/ (and save it also).

Those links are for ATI-original mobility catalyst drivers. If you feel interested in Omega ones, follow otakuoverlord's suggestion.

I don't know how the 6.10s are working out, but a lot of people had problems with the Mobility 6.9 drivers - crashes and such. The 6.8s seemed to be fine... Maybe someone with an ATI card in their laptop can shed some more light on that..

But yes, you need the Mobility drivers, not the regular ones. I'd stay away from Omega.

So far the only problem that I have seen with the 6.10's is if I use the Mobility ones, I only have one option for refresh rate, which is 60Hz but all I did was slightly modify the regular 6.10's to detect my card and now I can run my monitor again at 85Hz.

If anyone wants the modified inf for the regular Catalyst 6.10s to detect the Mobility X1600, here it is. One side note though, you have to manually install the driver and control center seperately because I didn't modify the installer to detect the Mobility X1600, so if you try to run the setup, it will give you the error,
