Hi all, I'm seeking help for a problem I'm encountering on my ASUS F81SE, which is approx. one and a half years old and has always served well till this cropped up last January.

It began with the keyboard typing by itself - a single letter would type repeatedly, forcing me to abandon anything I was writing or else have to use the backspace all the time. I thought it was a jammed key at first, but the problem soon grew to include:

    a. Many other keys randomly typing gibberish
    b. A number of keys not working at all (including "Shift" and "Enter")
    c. The arrow keys just shooting off on their own and disrupting all my online games :p

I wrote in to ASUS international service centre and they asked me to re-install the keyboard device driver and re-set the BIOS to original settings. Which I did, but nothing changed - the problem remained.

On my asking for more help, ASUS came back to say I should re-install Windows OS for the first partition (ie. C Drive). I would really rather not do this given that it's a huge re-format effort and their advice didn't work the first time :p It didn't help that on calling the local service centre, the person who took my call informed me that laptop keyboards don't have device drivers, they're just plug and play. This response that has left me with very little faith in the support centre since their information contradicts what the international side told me.

I'm at my wits' end and would really appreciate some advice. If nothing else I'll go ahead with the Windows OS re-installation, but I'm hoping someone can help me before it comes to that. Please do, thanks.

DO NOT reformat your computer over this, it is better to try a different OS to see if it's a hardware problem.

Try booting a linux livecd (like ubuntu) or liveusb (see unetbootin) and type in the text editor or web browser and see if the problems continue.

If they do, try removing your keyboard and reseating the connector. You can use a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or tissue to clean the contacts on the cable's connector (the very edge of the keyboard cable).

If that doesn't work, look for a replacement keyboard or try to get ASUS to cross-ship one to you under warranty.
