I bought my G1S in July of last year. Lately when I try to play any game it will shut down after a while, no lag or warning it just completely shuts down. It does not give any error messages. The keys seem to be getting very hot, sometimes almost too hot to be comfortable to touch. I tried tweaking vista some, removing stuff I don't need, running spyware and virus scans and defragmenting. Nothing really seems to work, I got coretemp to check my temps and it looks like when I am just browsing with a single webpage open (for example one page open at this forum) it runs at about 75C but as soon as I start playing a game it starts heating up and runs at right around 94-99C until it crashes. I have not been able to catch it in time to see the exact temp it shuts down at.
It takes about 5-10 minutes before I can start it up again, when I try to start it up before that it will sound like it is turning on but instead of doing any actual booting it just sits at a black screen. When it does start up it just starts up like normal, no errors or anything. It also seems to be excessively noisy.
My completely unprofessional guess is that a fan is out, does this sound right? I guess I am going to be sending it in again![]()

Yep, it's definately overheating. And your guess is on the money!
Those temperatures are dangerously high, normally 75 is the highest temperature you would probably see.
You should check the vents to see if there is any airflow at all. I would suggest minimal usage until this problem is fixed as it can do more damage to the system. -

Yeah contact ASUS for repair immediately, those temps are way out of the norm.
It does sound CPU orientated, since GPU failures tends to lock a system up and not shut it down, whereas the rest of the system will still be in a powered, state, and you need to force the shutdown. -
If it's noisy the fan is running and it's not dead.
My guess is that there is a lot of dust on the heatsink fins / fan. Click the ASUS Info Booth in my sig (main sticky) and there look for the cleanup guide.
Otherwise, maybe there is improper contact between the heatsink and CPU. Would require removal of the heatsink and voiding warranty, perhaps best sent in for repairs then.
Also, 94-99 is dangerously high for the CPU but not the GPU (not in the G1S at least). I'm not clear from your post whether you are quoting CPU or GPU temperatures.
But if it shuts down, it's probably the CPU. GPU shutdowns are I think in the 110 - 120 range. -
I am using coretemp which if I am understanding right shows the temp of the cpu it shows the temp of each core seperately I think.
Is there only one fan? I was thinking that there were probably two and that maybe one was out which was causing the other one run really fast all the time. -
I don't know if the G1S has a separate GPU fan. Some laptops have them, some don't. An experienced G1 owner will likely enlighten you.

On the G1s, there is only one fan for both the CPU & the GPU. Therefore, the reason for the high fan speed and hot GPU temperatures.
