Hello... I just recently got a Z70va. So far its been great, however, as of late ive had some problems with the speakers on the notebook.

Whenever I plug in external speakers or headphones into the SPDIF jack the speakers on the notebook monitor don't shut off.... now i dont mind it so much when im just plugging more speakers in.... but it kind of eliminates the usefulness of headphones.

Ive reinstalled the audio drivers and that didnt work.

Is there something ridiculously easy that im missing (if i am im really sorry for this post)

    What should I do?

    Thanks

Welcome to the forum! I don't often say this, but you be a good guy because you've got a sense of humor (the NL Las Vegas Vaction reference is priceless)....

In terms of your headphone jack, yes they should turn off and the switch should be software controlled. I'm curious by your statement though... you said headphones didn't turn off the speakers, but they did turn off when something was plugged into the SPDIF jack? I'm not sure if you're saying that it's working as it should... just not for the headphones? If so, I'd be curious if you've tried other headphones.... I've see some headphones just not work in laptops.... usually cheaper ones..... but it's something you may want to look at first.

sorry little typo... yah the speakers remain on all the time... so yah when i plug things into the SPDIF jack the laptop speakers do not turn off

yah ive tried a pair of sony headphones that are moderate quality headphones (i think)

and on top of that ive tried some Dell speakers and my roomates speakers ( i dont now what brand) so yah it just universally does not shut the laptop speakers off under any situation i have tried.

I got the exact same problem, it happened suddenly over night after about 2 months..
I've tried numerous methods to fix this problem, but i'm unable to do so..
I've tried installing the drivers again, all the settings possible and even formatted the hd and run recovery.. Still no result.. The speakers on the portable just won't mute when an jack-plug is inserted.. I've tried 4 different types.. :(
When asking in the ASUS forums, you get no help at all.. I think maby it's a mechanical problem... Can anyone please help us?? It's abit annoying! :(

Hello, I am also having this problem with my Z70va. Is the switching between speakers and headphones controlled by hardware that is independent of the OS? Has anyone solved this?

We have one of these comming in on monday for repair. I ve never seen one broken like this before but I am pretty sure its hardware, For anyone interested we will have solution posted soon. Email me if i dont reply here monday. Sacha from c9tech though it was the audio jack. I almost agree as i really dont know i do belive its the audio dj itself which incorporates the sound jacks

Eeeek, that stinks. The switch is hardware or software?

I will say this ahead of time, correct me if I am not understanding you correctly. :p

First, plugging anything into the SPDIF jack should not turn off the speakers.
However, plugging something into the headphone jack should turn off the notebook speakers.
If this is not happening as I described, it's most likely the jack on the audio board of your notebook.
You will have to send it in to get that board replaced.
    Contact your reseller.

I now fully agree. After replacing the audio dj on a broken unit it started working.
