I own an n71jq with 4 GB RAM and I've noticed that my CPU temps never go below 53*C for idle or for most casual tasks and they reach 80+*C for most games and if I am playing a heavy game like Crysis it goes up to 90+*C. Never seen it go past 93 but I am still worried. My settings for the games are 1280x720 res, no AA or AF (if the settings are available) and all other graphical effects are set to max.

So I need to know what's the problem here? I can't help but be bothered that I buy a computer for gaming with high settings and I still have to compromise.

Even though it's been a while since I've bought my laptop, I got these same temperatures even when I had bought the computer brand new, so I don't necessarily think dust is the problem. I haven't gotten a cooler yet so I suppose that could be one thing.

Any suggestions for what kind of cooler and what brand/make I should buy?

Would it also help if I minimized the number of active processes?

And for some reason, CPUID doesn't display temperatures for any of the hardware other than CPU. Do I have to get professional or something for that??

Finally, is it possible for my recovery partition to get infected/corrupted? I've tried to make backup disks using a brand called moserbaer DVD+R but it never worked so I am getting worried about that too.

Your temps look normal to me.

To monitor your other hardware temps, I like to use Everest or HWMonitor.

It's highly unlikely that your recovery partition is infected (with a virus?) or is corrupted. If you feel the need to make recovery disks, you can always use Asus's AI Recovery program available in your driver disk or from the Asus website.

Are you sure mobile i7 720QM is supposed to get near 90 to 90+ temperatures while gaming?

It doesn't happen everywhere and I have been noticing that ever since turning off AA and AF and reducing the number of active processes (not all of them, just a few that I could cover without going through every service belonging to microsoft corp), there has been a decrease in temperatures older games like fallout 3 or DMC 4 only get close to 80s, if ever, let alone cross mid-70s. But even then, games like crysis still cause the kind of temps I mentioned before.

@David, did you mean HWMonitor free version, v1.16? That's the one I use and I haven't found a setting to show GPU, RAM, HDD, etc., settings. I just can't see their temperatures.

Also about the infection/corruption, I was under the impression that it was pretty easy to get a virus just by surfing the internet without a security tool.

Not that I don't have one. I have several but I still wanted to know. Especially since they every so often manage to just find one somehow. Probably false positives because some of them found infected files in the other security software after it was updated and I also managed to do a check with HijackThis. Still it worries me sometimes since I am not very tech-savvy.

As I said about the AI recovery burner tool, it doesn't seem to be working for some reason. I have heard that the media used might be the problem but I'm not sure I can find any other brand locally and since I am a student in a university I don't exactly have the finance to buy a new DVD every other day.

Use an alternative driver (or the one from your recovery disk). The asus support site has several options, because they have several suppliers for the cameras.

Does your CPU or your GPU get to 90?
