I decided on getting the W2J after a long decision process, but I have a question about customization for the Ensemble line. Is it possible for you to install 2 GB of memory before shipping? I know it comes with 1GB normally, but is this something you can do before shipping it out? I've never ordered a computer with set 'specs' (ie only Dell before), so I don't know how that works. Thanks.

Oh, and for those of you who read this, sorry if the title made you think that the W2J was ready for preordering, not yet.

They ship the RAM with the notebook, but you have to install.

Yea, best if you install it yourself. It's not that hard, really :)

Also, if you really want to crunch those pennies, order RAM ahead of time from places like NewEgg, you may save a dollar or two :p

If the dealer installs the ram you void the warranty. if you install its ok because if you have an issue just put your old ram back in and ship to asus.

Thanks everybody, I'll probably get the RAM from somewhere else and install it myself. From other threads on here it seems that the extra stick will need to go under the keyboard. Is that still easy to do, even with NO prior experience? I can probably have it done at my local computer shop, but if its easy, I'll do it myself.

    Usually, it goes like this:

    1. Take ram out of package
    2. Look for screws marked 'K' on the bottom of laptop
    3. Unscrew the screws and store screws in safe place
    4. Look for 'tabs' above the keyboard, usually over the 'Esc,F1........Ins, Del' keys.
    5. Use a flathead screw, or a credit card to push those tabs in, the keyboard should pop up after 4-5 of the tabs are pop'ed off.
    6. Take keyboard out :)

It's extremely easy and I don't think you will have a problem with it. It goes like just how Coriolis said. As long as you're not the type that starts bashing things in, you're set :p

the w2v doesnt have tabs. just remove the battery. under where the battery goes is like 5 screws small ones. remove those. Next the plastic right about the keyboard that looks like it is perforated just pull off since the screws are gone. now the keyboard prys right off dont be afraid you wont break it. not you will see the ram slot. Put the keyboard back in snaps back make sure its all snapped right. put the plastic piece back and install the screws. If you can put together an ikea desk then i think your overqualified for this job. A monkey could do it. Not recommending you have one do it though.

OK, thanks for clearing that up SRD :)

All the ASUS notebooks I've gone through had tabs :p

im getting the w2j and i want to upgrade it to 2 gig ram too.
is it really better to install the ram yourself?
any other "advantages" besides being able to send it to asus?
    any "disadvantages"?

We'll ship it with the unit, but won't install it for the reasons said before - voiding the warranty - but also, because if you need to send it into Asus, you need to know how to take out your stick because Asus wants to see it in the stock form..... so knowing how and where to put it in will make it easier if it ever need to go in for work..

Alright, thanks everybody, once this becomes available, I'll be all set. I'll be using these instructions as a reference, but I think I'm smarter than a monkey :)

That's funny, because in Australia, the dealer sticks the RAM in if you ask for it. I sent it back to ASUS for repair with 2GB in it and they never said anything - just fixed it and sent it back (within 48 hours via air axpress).
