    Hi,

I recently purchased a new camera that came with a "SD HC Memory Card 4gb" and was wondering if the W3J could read this?

Unless it outright says, or unless you have a nice driver upgrade, I'm inclined to say no.

If it doesn't work, you can either get a Sandisk SDHC adapter (works quite well) or just plug your camera via USB directly to the PC.

I'm sure it doesn't work. The card reader in the J series laptops at least only read SD cards, no SDHC.

Actually, SanDisk provides a nice MicroMate memory card reader with their HC cards. Otherwise you can get it for not much more than 10USD.

if i downgrade Vista laptop to XP, SDHC, which once worked, doesn't work anymore....

so... since i'm using W3J on XP, i'm wondering ifa nybody that put Vista on W3J, successfully made SDHC work.....

there's got to be another way for XP to read SDHC on W3J......

The only way is driver support, the reason why vista might work are because of the generic Vista drivers that come with the operating system, as well as the forced initiative for those companies(like Asus) to release newer drivers to support Vista. Now I'm not sure if installing vista will solve or provide SDHC support, but it's worth a shot.

I have used 2GB cards, but not SDHC. It you really want to know, I can give a definite answer in a week. I would be surprised, it should just be a driver thing, and SDHC should have been popular enough when the W3j came out for it to work.

Awesome, well this driver worked even on my W3V! Like I said, it's a driver issue and not operating system. Great post Professor!

Yep, I want to make an errata and say that i was absolutely wrong in my first post on this thread. :)

    A driver update works.

BTW I tried that driver update that was linked but it didn't work for my V6J. :( Although it has a Ricoh controller -- but probably it's an older revision.

Not sure what you meant by "it didn't work".

The self installer does not work from that link just so you know, you need to get the driver inf files only available from a zip file. To install, goto Device Manager>IDE ATA/ITAPI Controllers and update the respective components and use the "Have Disk" method pointing to the correct inf file.

Yep. I manually installed the driver for the SD card. It looked nice in Device Manager after the reboot, but it still didn't read my SanDisk 4GB SDHC class 6.

Then, I used the executable driver setup (which also installs the MMC and xD driver). Same result.

So I think I have a different revision of a Ricoh controller.

Right now, I don't care enough to do the research to get it working. The MicroMate reader included with the card is slim enough to be slipped into the pocket of the camera carrying case, so whenever I'm in the situation where I can download photos to my laptop, the reader is also nearby.

When you say it doesn't read; does it prompt to reformat or something or is there absolutely no response after you insert the SDHC card?

    Zero response.

I don't remember though if I restarted twice after I installed the drivers (the page says "a couple of restarts"); also I didn't install the entire combo first, just the SD driver, and I did get a yellow mark near the MMC card reader device.

I might when I have the time just uninstall all the stuff, reboot, and reinstall manually all 3 devices. See if it works then.

I also solved the problem with those drivers. It just required a couple of more restarts, and maybe a few days to settle down. :)
