Hi everyone, I have just found out a website selling a Asus C90s Quad core to my surprise.
http://www.laptopsandpcs.co.uk/Shop..._C90s_gaming_laptop_Q6600_QUADCORE_160GB.htmlDoes quad core really work on Asus C90s, would the motherboard of c90s be able to support it and use the true power of the quad core???PHP:
Or is it just being underclocked and will be running at a dual core speed!??! If that is the case what is the point of having a quad core in the C90s for ?? IT is very STRANGE INDEED!
CAn any notebook experts or guru confirm for me whether is website is not cheating on this customers ??
Cause if it runs quad core i will definitely be interested!! At those prices, I will only be drooling crazily after it.
Hope I get a quick response from you experts out there!! I will be waiting thanks!!
-
Are there any feedbacks? Would kill to know if what they offer on the website is for real ? quad core asus c90s ??
Would it work ? would it ??
Thank you. -
It's a quad core, why would it not be a quad core? Also, there are no "dual core speeds". Any cpu can be made to run at any speed (up to a certain point).
Obviously the mobo in there is a desktop variant, and so is the cpu. -
The C90 cannot take a quad core, it doesnt work. They also stole Vicious's Review for their website. A Little bit shady...
-
This website looks absolutely fake.
-
Someone should call the and ask some really teckie questions while taping it. It would be funny to hear.
-
Could be they hacked there own BIOS which clocks down FSB, wouldn't be the first time.
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Quad core is possible on the c90. Just need an official bios if they decide to use it.
-
But a Company that doesn't have its own reviews?, Probly some guy in his basement. -
As far as I'm aware, the only reason the q6600 wasn't supported with the C90s was temp issues, but the same thing was true about the 8600M GT DDR3 version. -
One guy on another forum I go has a Q6600 is it never goes under 55C on a DESKTOP with the stock fan. I guess we would always be hearing that 747 if someone decided to put one on it.

In theory the quad core will fit in there, its the same size and same socket as the dual core, just the bios needs to support it.
thats not the hard part, the bios may even already support it, the reason it was scraped is because of the heat. My e6700 already pushed the limits, a quad core will run nearly 2x as hot it just wont work unless its undervolted and the clock speed may need to be limited.
Regardless its sort of pointless as the cpu is the strongest part of the laptop already. -
Hi and thank you everyone for their feedbacks and opinions!
@ViciousXuSmc, I kind of agree with you on the point that the quad core are under clocked and their speed will be limited. It really pointless as I suspect the heat output from the quad core will destory the mobo if its not limited. Well thats just my opinion I guess, maybe they have fixed the heat problem , but I think that the e6700 cpu is already pushing its limits , so this quad core project or idea from this website is going to be a bust. -
But honestly, I secretly hoped this quad core Asus C90s would actually work out. But Alast, its too good to be true. Well even with the Dual Core , the prices they are offering is still too good for us to ignore it . I dunno, I will try to email the company to see if I get any proper responses from them.
If its good, I would consider buying one of the dual core C90S builds.
What do you all think about their dual core build then? -
In idle, probably -

What about some of these case mods people have done invloving drilling holes underneath and such. Could it possibly be done to install say another 40mm fan underneath the gpu to draw out additional heat for the gpu and then install one of the quad-cores?
I know it might still strain the cooling but if the 2.93 C2DX will work why not a quad core? Also, if Asus is still planning that 17" version of the C90 then will quad be supported in that beast? -
I think the q6600 G0 (revision) runs cooler then x6800, donno for sure would have to look it up on hardforum.com or something.
-
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
I didn't say it was feasible I just said its possible. Quadcores are overrated anyways and their prices kill the price
erformance factor of the c90.
-
The 8800GTX is a MXMIII card; C90S is MXMII. Even if an MXMII version was made, it would not fit in the heat/power envelope.
The C90S's chipset supports only 3 GB of DDR2.
And the C90S has only one hard drive bay, and the CD drive isn't one of the removable ones that could allow for a second drive bay space. -
clockfort, I highly doubt he was referring to the C90s and remember originally the C90S was not intended to house either the x6800 nor a DDR3 video card, both of which are now in the C90s. The q6600 G0 atleast is no worst off then the x6800. BIOS mods and hacks are out there and I can picture them working and allowing at least the q6600 revision. All this is determent by the BIOS and the discretion of the manufacturer and we all know companies like Alienware who like to push there notebooks to the breaking point with cheap parts and way to much heat to claim they have the best.

A asus technician told me there waiting for the Bios upgrade to run quad core on the c90s

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Its been semi confirmed that they are. They are working on it, but have not confirmed that it will be available.
-
Yes I know they are making a new bios, but making a bios to actually make C90S run quad core? I'm doubting that.
-
The C90S on stock cooling with full load can barely cool a E6700 running at full speed (2.66Ghz), my system runs at 78 degrees celsius on full load. A quad core will increase that power output by another 30%, and the amount of heat possibly 50% increase, there's no way a C90S would be able to cool that access heat if it's already struggling with the E6700. There's a reason why they limited the processors at 2.93ghz, and it's because of power consumption and heat dissipation. -
im curious as to why eurocom got banned.
-
I'm not sure about how well it would work though. Even with the dual core X6800 (extreme one), the C90S had to be upped to a 120W AC adapter. The Q6600 has a TDP of 95W, a full 20W higher than the X6800, so theres no way it would function properly unless the AC adapter was upped to 150W or so. Plus the heat issue. That could be a killer. And the 15 minute battery life. But it would work, and thats the important bit.....
Or you could wait for the Penryn mobile quad core....
EDIT: Actually, the Penryn quads might work. They should have lower power consumption than kentsfield by a ways, so even though the TDP is the same, the actual power consumption might be low enough to do fine on the C90S with 120W ac adapter. -
With the 120W adapter, I might just go grab a Wolfdale (if I can find one) and give it a whirl.
-
I've got a 120W ac adapter when my C90 first came form the repair service with a new motherboard of newer revision. And it is huge! But not as hot as the old one...
-
-
I could, but i send it back for the second time ... i need a new graphic card, this one is crappy and no motherboard change or ac adaptor could change that

I didnt have that mobo revision and was able to run the GDDR3 card no problems on the old 90w adapter. -
-
Nope, I have a older mobo with DDR2 video card (first release/first shippment) and I needed the 120W to run in Gaming mode with out it draining the battery. Asus just RMA the brick for me after I explained the problem. The 120W is a bit bigger then the 90W brick, not much and its not huge. I had a Toshiba before my C90S, that is a huge brick.
-
It's all about the TDP the highest supported on the D901C's and the C90's was 75TDP. Clevo had to make a motherboard revision for the D901C's to be able to use 95TDP processors...i.e. the Q6600 and the Q6700. I have not heard of a motherboard revision for the C90.
-
I also believe the clevo is a 17" using a desktop motherboard, no?
-
I don't think its using a desktop motherboard, since it still has notebook RAM modules. A DT mobo would be also too big to fit into a notebook FF, no?
It does use the desktop chipset and processor though, to be sure. -
Any possibility that Asus is going to revise the C90S motherboard just to fix the stupid RAM issue?
-
-
-
Penryn is not supported on the D901C 965chipset either. They are looking, at yet another, motherboard revision to be able to use them. I suspect it will take the same thing for the C90's.
I would be wary of any company offering a Q6600 or a Q6700 in the C90 atm.
We had a few resellers modifying the D901C's motherboard, undervolting and trying to up the cooling in them to be able to use the quads and the 95W TDP before they came out with the 1st motherboard revision. It was a bit hit or miss to be honest. For long term stability I would not recommend it until the ODM comes out with a solution. Which again would more than likely be a motherboard swap out.
I hope that helps you guys, and I do hope the C90 gets 'official' support for Quads. -
The 965 chipset supports Penryn, it's just not supported by Intel. However ODM's have already release 965 boards with Penryn compatible-bios', indicating that it is not an inherent chipset problem that would limit support of the Penryn processors.
Also, just out of curiosity, have you heard anything about instability in original D901c's with OEM quad cores? I haven't been keeping up with the D901c stories, but I know we did have at least a few forum members with Killer or Eurocom quad cores on the original motherboard.
Q6600 Quad core Asus c90s??!!!
