There is an interesting topic going at Gaming section comparing the Sager NP8662 with GTX260m and different processors to see how does the Q9000 fares against the other faster clocked duos.
So far, the Q9000 has been keeping up offering near identical performance to a P9700 processor, a big whooping 800mhz difference. Additionally, the Q9000 performs better on multicore optimized games.
So! How about we try to see how different is the performance between all the G51 variants, regarding processor only?
I propose we test our laptops in a deadly fight and determine once and for all the myth..... Are faster clocked duos better at gaming than lower clocked quad cores?![]()
We need to set some rules, a standard resolution, and stock clocks for GPU (perhaps also use the same drivers). Let's try CPU at stock, then CPU with Asus's Turbo mode and record the performance.
So, everyone suggest games, both old and new, and settings with a standard resolutions (like testing at 1280x720, 1600x900 and 1920x1080) that we can use to test the processor differences out!
modded G51 are of course welcome, like forge with the extreme processor can perhaps defeat us all.![]()
First lets get all the suggestions going, then we start getting the results. I am a bit busy but I will try my best to provide my own scores. Nonetheless there are several G51 owners that can provide substantial proof!

You first.
-
Well, standard resolution would need to be 1366x768 for the large amount of RX05s out there, we wouldn't want to force them to use external monitors
-
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Yes you do.
-
Yeah I know RX05 owners have 1366x768 screens, I was one of them, that is why I proposed to test 1280x720, 1600x900 and 1920x1080. We could change the 1280x720 to 1366x768 if thats easier, but I had some games not able to display that res, which is why I said 720 res. Lets keep all settings in high and controlled by the game, meaning no personalized settings, unless someone proposes them for specific games.
For games I can try these: Left 4 Dead, Crysis, BattleForge, Demigod. There are other bechmark tools we could use, like Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, Arma 2 demo, GTA 4(I don't have this game though).
I am very busy with work and school right now (gotta love those exam weeks coupled with projects pending) but I will try to bench and update scores along next week asap. Everyone can start benching if they want, and I can update the first post with the results. -
I can test Crysis, Left 4 Dead, Prototype, COD4, Far Cry 2, Mass Effect, Devil May Cry 4, GTA4, Street Fighter IV, and Fallout 3 as of now. currently have some driver issues I'm trying to resolve first though.

Go on Forge, beat everyone with your X9100.
Is it possible to get some G71's in the competition too, as they have the same GPU as the G51? I know the American G71 has more RAM, but you probably won't see much difference between 6GB and 4GB. IDK, just thinking of ideas... -

I don't know if I want to benchmark. I'll temperature-mark, though
-
pfffft. you know you want to =D and btw Forge I found a CPU-Z dump of a P8700 clocked at 3.33GHz, so I -AM- going to at some point attempt to overvolt it and see what comes up.
-
EIement- wow. 12k on your G51? Only thing that would seperate yours from mine(when if comes in) is your highly OC state for the CPU and possibly your GPU.
I would want to run stock. I'm hoping to hit 10k. I'll be happy. Considering I THINK my G1s did 4k. Hmm I need to dig back on my older posts. I'm sure I must've posted something about my G1 speed in 3dmark. -
the 12,600 was at RX05 res, my max at X1A res is 11,900 which I'm gonna try beating as soon as I figure out some driver issues. I thought I was going to keep my GPU stock clocks as well but that was before I found out my GPU is an odd one. No matter what game I am playing, I always hit 90C, but the fan kicks in and instantly drops my temps to ~80C. then it goes back up and down etc, repeating itself. The only way to keep a -STABLE- temperature, is to OC, which gives me a stabilization temperature of about 85C in most games.

Without going through a bunch post, which video driver should I change to once I get the new computer? I remember reading somewhere that the stock(which may not be the stock ones anymore) drivers never downclocked the video card when not in use? As long as I can auto throttle my video card and CPU it'll be all good. I just need the battery life to run the blu-ray disk.
Oh, I found my old post. With a older driver, I hit just about 4k in '06 on default. Yeah... I'll feel great to see it hit 10k.I bet I can now run my Red Alert 3 at native resolution. On my G1s-b1 I'll move dog slow with everything maxed.
And hopefully I'll be able to run my Fallout3 without setting everything to gameboy graphic levels. lol
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. -
the stock drivers do not throttle the GPU, some people apparently have issues with downclocking on the 186.82 drivers, but I do not. They have worked the best for me. Your three main choices imo are DOX 185.85, and WHQL 186.42 or 186.82 . and btw, I went from a desktop that maxed at 204marks in 3dmark so....I got a -GIGANTIC- improvement =D.
-
I want to know also how quad-cores perform on the game which is fully support multicores, Is it really much better than high clock rate dual cores out there?
-
The very least 3dmark06 you can get, with everything on stock as soon as you boot up is 9800 marks. Of course it is recommended to change drivers as personally, the stock ones didn't fare as well as lets say, Dox 185 or the 186 WQHL nvidia drivers. I haven't tried OCing anything yet, nor 3dmark with the new drivers. I will leave it downloading and then try it to see if I can break 10k barrier all stock.
It should, because I at least noticed a big jump in fps in Demigod, just from changing drivers. Stock drivers gave very erratic performance.
Don't worry you haven't hijacked the thread, as testing hasn't begun.
Why won't you join the battle, forge? You are among the most powerful around
-
erm...that 9800 isn't exact. I got 9400 stock with my X1A, straight out of the box no settings or anything changed.
-
Don't forget that 186.82 drivers gave stress on GPU all the time (always 16x pci bus) mean temp will got up abit higher around 7-10c.
-
Like I said tumman, that only happens for -some- people. Mine works just fine, I'm idling at 46C w/ WHQL 186.82.
-
I'm using 186.81 and they work great.
