I recently purchased an Asus G1s (being shipped) with all the goodies on it (thanks to the posts on this site) including the Nvidia 8600M. Although this card is more than enough for my current gaming needs, I was wondering if I can upgrade this card in future? Also, how long would it be before I have to upgrade this GPU/laptop considering the fact that it is DX10 compatible?

You can't upgrade the GPU because it is soldered to the motherboard. Since it's the GDDR3 version of the 8600GT, is will last you quite a while as it will allow you to play current and previous games at high settings or close to it. Newer games can be played at medium-highish settings.

Well, the time before you want to upgrade will just be based on when you can find a suitable card, and when you think you need a better card to play the games you want to play. Unless they changed something, though, the card isn't going to be upgradeable.

Thanks all!
Hoping I wont have to get my next notebook for another 3 yrs atleast -
The 8600GT should be fine for at least 2 years.
If you're serious about gaming, just invest in a desktop computer that can be easily upgraded. -
@ thegsrguy: I know but my current job requires me to relocate every few months...so investing in an expensive alienware rig is a lil risky..will get a gaming rig once I manage to find me one of them desk jobs
On the q on upgradable GPUs...are there any laptops which DO offer that facility..askin just to improve my knowledge on this topic -

Sager NP5790/Clevo M570RU. There's more though, I just can't think of them.
You can definitely build a solid gaming rig for $1000 desktop wise. I would recommend doing that over buying from Alienware. -
IF you really want an upgradable asus, I suggest going for the C90. But I think upgrading the GPU is pointless becuase a good GPU coupled with an old processor and RAM just defeats the purpose of getting the new GPU.
