    Hi everyone,

I've read a bunch of different reviews on the drives and gotten a headache trying to figure out which is better. Some say the 7200s use less power than the 5400s, or the same or 10% more etc... Others state the Seagate is best because it is quieter and takes less power than the Hitachi while other reviews conflict. It's giving me a headache trying to sort it all out, and so I thought I could just ask it here and get your opinions as people who have actually bought these things and if you like them.

It'd be especially good to know if they cause heat under the laptop palmrest and with the Z96J and S96J being so quiet in terms of main fan cooling - is it really noticiable? Has anyone had any major issues with the drives or any other tips to make the decision?

Mostly I'm trying to figure out from this page which one is best to get with the laptop.

    Thanks a lot,
    Peter

heat wise I can't tell the difference between a hitachi 5400rpm drive and a 7200rpm drive. They both run very cool.

That's good - does it have a significant affect on performance, noise and battery life?

I've got a Seagate 7200rpm 100gb. It's very quiet (I have my laptop in classes all the time for notes.) From a review I read, the Hitachi's tend to be alot louder then their Seagate counterparts

From my experience upgrading my W7J from a Hitcachi 5k100 to a 7k100:
    - The sound coming from the drive is no louder or softer between the two.
    - The heat generated is slightly higher with the 7k100 (but only by 1-2c).
    - There is no discernable increase or decrease in battery use between the two.
    - There is a noticeable performance increase with the 7k100.

I have never used a a 7200rpm seagate. But most reviews suggest it is slighlly quieter, slightly cooler, and slightly slower than the Hitcahi.

Thanks for the info - I acutally went into the MileStonePC to take a look at the laptop - I compared it with the Travelmate 8204 and a couple other ASUS and I liked the Z96 best of all (they only had a the pure silver lid unfortunately but oh welll). The guy there actually told me that Asus recommends 5400rpm drives for this laptop. I'd never heard that before - can anyone confirm this?

    Thanks,
    Peter
