Asus is pretty big in taiwan. (as of laptop) they are head to head competition with acer. i know asus helps apple or sony or other companies assembly their laptops. but is asus's own brand big in the US? i meant laptop not motherboards and video cards. i've noticed alot of talks in this forum about asus but when i go to best buy or compusa, i don't see that many asus laptop. its always dell or toshiba and sometimes acer. so how did you guys get your asus laptops?

Best Buy and Compusa are 'selling' to uneducated consumers! The average user who goes to a retail outlet to purchase a laptop is more concerned about price and ease of purchase than quality and useability.

Asus does not sell direct to consumers in the US, nor do they have any agreement with big box retailers to market/sell their product. The only way to get an Asus notebook is online, either from major online merchants or Asus resellers. Please read the Newbie FAQ for further info.

About one and half years ago, one day, I chatted with Asus business development manager, he said some big box stores do want to sell Asus products and buy from Asus directly, like Fry's, but because of Asus's RMA policy, they couldn't reach agreement, you all know all these big box stores only care about the customer's satisfaction and don't care about the supplier's interest, all customer return will go back to the suppliers / manufactuers, Asus said no to yes policy.

When I bought my A8Jm my dad basically gave me a budget and told me to get a laptop. I didn't like the budget so I got a job to cover the difference, which he was fine with.

A week after the laptop I got arrives, my dad asks me what I got...a Dell, maybe? When I said "Asus" he bugged out. "WHAT? What do you need an ASUS for?" I'd assume he'd heard of the name and probably in a bank...so I'd say they have a pretty solid reputation. Not quite related but just in case you were wondering...

Asus make 13.3 inch for macs and if you compare the w2 and the mac 17in, i see some similarities too. Well Asus rock in the motherboard category and I guess motherboards on a laptop are important (especially when they cost $200 $300 to replace, you better get one that is solid). Plus I like the fact that not many stores carry asus laptops. It makes them more exclusive and end up in hands of people that know how to appreciate an awesome notebook.

Like it or not, what he says is the hard truth.
