My W7j is not working right and I'd like to restore the operating system [Windows xp pro] but don't have my recovery disks any longer. I called Asus but they can't help me if I don't give them my serial number but I can't do that because it's all rubbed out and it's not under the battery either :( . Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

The W7 series was dear to my heart, little 13" wonder :).

I can't remember when Asus started shipping models with the recovery HDD partition built-in, if this was started before the W7. Check the hard drive in Disk Management (Control Panel, Admin Tools) to see if it's there. If yes, then you can access it via BIOS on bootup.

What's not working? At the risk of sounding simple, did you try System Restore far enough back first to see if the problem resolves?

Restoring to stock XPP, though, is going to leave you with near 200 Microsoft updates to apply if you go back that far, plus update to XP SP3 (and I thought I read recenlty that MS pulled the update from their site).

Assuming you could get an XP disc, that wouldn't help as much unless you still have the driver CD (but Asus still has drivers for the W7 on their support site).

Reasonable questions are always welcome here.

    1. Yes, you can access the reinstall menu at the bootup screen - somebody around here will remember the right button to push - David, E.B.E., GentechPC, Geared2Play - I've been off Asus too long to remember that detail in my head . If you don't get any replies here, send any of them a PM.

    1. Yes, the recovery partition contains an image of the full OS state (including driver settings) from the factory and will reinstall the OS and system to stock, the way it was when you first bought it. Obviously, save all your data first, and you'll have to reinstall all applications. This option is many times faster than a XP install from scratch - this just copies over the factory HDD image over the the system partition.

    3. Asus does not supply driver CDs to end users - you'd have to get the current updates from their older model support website here.

Turn on your computer and press F9 when the Asus logo appears.
