    Hi All,

I am interested in purchasing the Asus G1 / G1S but there are many retailers in UK and many have different information that I got confused. So I hope anyone can help. My questions are:

    - Does the G1S have Nvidia 8600 GT or GS? I want the GT since it's faster than the Nvidia Go 7700
    - Is it possible to get the G1S with Windows XP?
    - Which is the recommended (and reliable) retailer in UK that allows the buyer to configure some settings on the laptop? I.e. have XP instead of Vista, have BT, etc.

    Thanks!

The G1s is the same worldwide, it has the 8600GT.

You can buy Windows XP on the side if you want XP.

Not necessarily - ASUS often changes the specs / OS depending on the market

EG in Aus the G1 only came with a 120 gig HDD, but came with a copy of Vista Ultimate instead of Home Premium

And in South Korea - the G1 only came with a 1.83 GHz C2D

Thanks for the info! The problem is that many UK retailer doesn't specify whether the G1S have the 8600M GT or GS, and I heard some have only the GS version. Don't know if this is true.

Anyone in UK, can you recommend a retailer where you can change the OS (to WinXP) and have the GT card?

    Coriolis,
I can certainly purchase XP separately, but then it'll cost way too much. I think ASUS and other manufacturer get a discount on the OS since they bought it in bulk from MS.

Actually, you get a discount for the OS since you were "kind enough" to buy it together with the machine. Of course, the machine only comes with the OS installed, so you're forced to pay for it even if you don't use.

I agree that it's a waste of money (charity for Microsoft, they need it, the poor guys) to pay for a Vista OS and then buy an XP for the machine. But I'm afraid the G1S will only come with Vista; I think one guy even asked ASUS if they are developing drivers for XP, and they are not. I'm not sure though, perhaps some UK forum members have better info.

Perhaps you should consider a different brand of notebook if want to get the notebook with XP; or an older ASUS but probably that's not an option for you. :)

I didn't know that Asus won't build XP drivers for their newest laptop, that's a crappy policy, I think. I know that old OS (Win95, Win98) may no longer be supported, but Vista is quite new and typically the previous version OS, XP in this case, is still supported by the manufacturer for at least 1-2 years.

I don't mind using Vista, but I am just waiting till MS fix all the issues that currently exist, especially on software compatibility and their Mobile Device center. iTunes is very finicky in Vista and many owner of Windows Mobile PDA is having issue syncing data.

Anyone have can confirm that Asus will NOT have XP drivers for the G1S, please kindly respond.

IMO, as a business user, the Aero interface alone makes Vista hands down better than XP. Want more than 3.2 GB of RAM? You need a 64-bit OS. The future is Vista 64-bit.
