If I were to put a hard drive in the second hard drive bay, would it be advisable to remove the two strips of foam from the drive bay as well as the strip of foam that is on the bottom cover of the laptop itself?

I would leave them in place if I was you. I added a second drive and I find that the foam padding helps hold the drive in place without having to order the extra hard drive bracket.

That's um... what the foam padding is there for.

I used little pieces of felt... the kind you put under chairs legs. It did work perfectly.

Thanks guys. My only concern was whether or not those foam strips could handle the heat generated by the drive.

They handled my 7200 RPM drive just fine.

@ keith1341- my Dual 320GB 7200RPM Seagates (matching pair) never break 35C under idle or 38C while gaming.

Hmm... my 320GB never changes from 30C.. (probably because it basically idles unless I'm listening to music).

Mine idles at 29-31C but I'm usually listening to music or rendering apophysis in the background.

My WD 320 scorpio black idles at 32, same for the 500 seagate that came with the laptop. I have to say that I swapped HD location. I put the 320 with OS where the 500 was thinking that being closer to the fan and vents could keep the HD cooler.
