    while formatting a new hdd, i realized that disk 0 has a 3rd partition of 7.81gb. it has no drive letter and is completely empty, i dont understand what its doing there. any ideas?

    Most likely it is the recovery partition.

    Yep - recovery partition standard on all Asus laptops. If you ever want to restore the laptop to the factory-fresh state, press F9 at startup. If you want to reclaim the space, all of the recovery stuff is also on the included recovery DVD.
