    Hello all,

I am a brand new member with his first post, even though I have been lurking around this forum for a while. I am very close to buying the W3V based on all the positive comments here. It will be my first notebook. If I will to play games which do not have the native 1280x768 res option, how will it look on the W3V screen? For a 1024x768 games res, does it automatically stretched out to fill the screen or can it be set to non-stretch but with black bars on the sides? I would much rather play with a 1-to-1 pixel mapping game resolution.

It depends on the game. More modern games have native support for widescreen, but older ones (including some recent ones) require hacks in the Windows registry or things like the .ini files. Some games - most notably Warcraft 3 - don't support either, so you end up with either black bars or stretching / distortion.

Check out http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/ for more than you could ever want to know.

Most gamers want widescreens, but most of their games don't support them..... figure that one out.

The games that do support widescreen are really sweet to play though.. I don't think there is a way to to play it with bars on the side without the hack.

    Thanks,

You can just go to the display properties, click "advanced" on the settings tab (where you change resolution - to 1024x768) and on one of the tabs, I think there is a checkbox for "preserve aspect" or something like that...

I actually uninstalled the ATI stuff (other than the device driver), and now I dont have the ATI specific settings there.. I guess I need to reinstall that. (I thought I only needed the driver for those settings, but I guess its the other ATI software).

If the options give you a "preserve aspect ratio"... Checking out two of my regular ratio games that is an option... never noticed it before... never really had a need for it either since I haven't gotten to game much lately.

I don't have good numbers...... Someone who has gamed a lot on their W3 in the last two weeks should be able to answer this very well.

OK, I reinstalled the ATI control panel, and here is how to change from stretched to black bars in 800x600 or 1024x768.

Control panel > Display > settings > advanced > ATI Displays > Panel > "Scale image to panel size".

Wow, thanks for all the quick responses. This is a great forum. That's helpful information, RobotMule. And to Justin from ProPortable, you will have my business sometime next week. Should I call or just order it online?

Oh, one more thing. Anybody knows the response time of the W3V LCD screen? Does it employ the latest technology with the ridiculous low 4-8 ms response time? For those who have played fast-action games on the unit, any serious ghosting problems? How are fast motions from DVD movies playback?

I also would like to get an idea of the average bad pixel count from the new owners.

I'm guessing it's about 12ms. When I play on my CRT, the game is unnoticable when it comes to ghosting [as it should]. I doubt it is an 8ms or lower.

Played far cry, doom3, cod on wide screen and no bars. I think the bars are on the movies not on games. Games will play normal on any size screen. Am not the biggest gamer but gamed on every size screen you can imagine. Never saw any anomaly that separates widescreen from standard.

    Hi Geared2Play,

The black bars I mentioned are not referred to the ones you get on the top and bottom of a widescreen movie playback. Some games only provide 4x3 aspect ratio screen options (1024x768, 1280x1024, etc..). For a 16x9 screen like the W3V, these game screens would be stretched and all objects would look a little wider. RobotMule had mentioned a solution in the ATI control panel settings. These 4x3 games would not be stretched to fill the screen but maintain a 1-1 pixel mapping with black bars on each side. Of course, for games that provide widescreen resolution like 1280x768, it would not be a problem.

Ok that makes sence but i played on a widescreen with that same res many times i never noticed that quality. Ye you would think so but it looks as normal as any other 3d model cartoon would. I would say if such a thing really bothers you dont use the widescreen. I am unfamiliar with the ati control panel property you mentioned. I should give it a try and see for my self. I got used to the native aspect ratio very quick and had no complaints. It all depends. Some people will notice things others will never. :)
