For those that saw my other thread about the laptop no longer working (after only 5 days), I contacted ASUS and they issued me an RMA to ship the laptop back. The rep said I could opt to get it replaced with a new one or try and get it repaired. I just opted for a new one! :)

I asked if I could keep my HDD as it has some sensitive info as well as all my programs loaded onto it. ASUS said no problem. My question is in regards to the Anti-virus (Nod32) and Firewall (zone alarm), Spybot, spyware blaster, etc etc. When I put the HDD into the new laptop, will I have to re-install those SW again? Or will all the settings already be in place?

Also I'm assuming that the OS (Vista) and such will just load up without any problems correct? Would I need to re-install anything (i.e. drivers) again?

    Thanks!

If it's the exact same setup as the old computer, which it sounds like it is, you shouldn't have a problem. The reason why HDD aren't easily swappable is because of drivers, but if you keep with the same configuration, I don't see any problems.

However, Vista may not be as cooperative since it uses a hardware check for Microsoft Genuine. This might mean a lovely call to India.

Thanks Lithus. Sounds like I'll be OK. If at worst case Vista throws a hissy fit because of HW check, then I'll just go the route and use the recovery disks for re-install. To me that should fix it.

Vista shouldn't have a problem since it would just check a signature in the BIOS checking to make sure its an ASUS, and then the rest of the information is on the hard drive. So it will stay activated and you will be fine.

    I just thought of something...

I activated windows on my old G1S (after verifying the OEM stickers underneath the laptop with Windows call center). Now if I receive a new laptop w/o HDD (since I'm keeping mine) will this be a problem if I need to re-install Vista?

    Not one bit.

You only are having it installed on one computer, so they will just ask you some questions just to make sure. Questions like "What happened to the old installation?" this is it, i just have to repair it "Do you have it installed on any other machines?" no, this is the hard drive from the broken laptop that i got back as a replacement, so i am just putting this hard drive in it.

or something similar, that is if you have to call in to activate again.

The part about calling India isn't that Microsoft won't let you reinstall Vista, it's just the fact that they put you on hold for 15 min, have you read a string of 20 characters to them, and have them read you a string of 20 other characters, all while neither of you can understand each other fully.

BTW, can you tell that I hate activating machines?

    Lithus -
Hahah...I feel the pain! I had to go through that when I activated my old G1S last week. It was a long and painful phone call. ;)
