Quick question for all you lucky A8Jm owners. I believe the LCD panel is an AUO part with a 25ms response time... so my question is, how is this display for DVD playback and gaming? I'm referring to any motion blur on fast panning. I'm already aware that the viewing angles aren't the best, and that isn't a major concern.
If I go with this machine, I'm planning on buying a 20" widescreen monitor down the track (something like the BenQ FP202W) but I'm interested in how annoying the A8Jm's display is going to be in the interim.

I have no problems with this displays refresh time, I play a lot of Counter strike with no problems and watch a lot of TV and movies on it with no troubles.
Beside the laptop I have a 20" Dell 2005fpw, the view angle and colours on the dell are nicer as to be expected but the a8jm has a nice display for a laptop. aside from the view angles it's better than any other laptop i've used ( dell d600/800, fujitsu s6110 and sharp mv11 ) -
Thanks for the quick reply Atom. I guess pixel response times aren't the be all and end all.
Any other opinions? Anyone? -

I just got my A8Jm today and I'm really stoked and excited about it, but one thing confuses me.
The reviews of the A8 series on the site are all very positive about the screen. Maybe I'm just a fuddy-duddy or maybe the screen on my old 7510GX was just really nice, but the quality of my screen is horrible.
There's nasty light leakage at the bottom of the display, and the screen as a whole seems to have this sort of grainy quality to it, like the glossy coating itself is textured. Additionally, the colors are a bit dull comparatively (though Digital Vibrance certainly helps alleviate that), and the viewing angles are pretty poor. While there aren't any dead pixels and I could probably get used to this if I had to, I'm wondering if this is normal. If it is, can anyone tell me if the screen on the W3J is any better?
Do any of the other A8J series owners know what I mean or have had similar experiences? I don't want to bother Danny over at MilestonePC, where I ordered this from, because he's been very helpful so far and I don't want to be an irritating customer, so I'd really like to know if this is typical of this model. If it is, I can cope, but if not I'd rather see if I can exchange it for a unit with a better screen. -

I checked your screen before shipped out, for A8Jm, all like that, you will see the bottom part lighter than higher part because of the light behind there, at least another A8Jm unit won't be better than that.
You are close to Fremont anyway, maybe one day when you pass by, you can walk in to Asus, see what they say, they will tell you it is normal. -
are you sure its light leakage you are talking about. because that screen has poor viewing angles. on a completely black screen if you move your head up and down. does the part that looks like light leakage move up and down? if so thats just poor viewing angles and its inversing the color. the grainy you are talking about is the sparkle effect. many lcds have this it can be common. my 20.1in dell lcd has it as well. you get used to it its not defective. you happened to choose the lcd size that has the poorest vewing angles 14.1in are notorious for that. although most people dont seem to be bothered by it.

Yea when i received my W3J..i noticed the grainy screen also. I was upset at first, but after realizing that all of the W3J's are like that, was not big deal. GOod luck with your A8Jm and post some pics please.

playing Q4 right now on mine, I haven't noticed it ghosting but then I've never owned an LCD that would. Rapid text scrolling is fine, if somewhat slower than my desktop Samsung. Now really noticeable though. Colors are a bit odd compared to the Samsung too but then I don't know which is right and both look fine on their own.
-
colors not a 100% but thats to be expected... slight very slight ghosting in counter strike source, doesn't bother with game play at all. The first few times i played it was a different experience than my crt but now im totally used to it.
i think the only major thing u'll face is the vertical viewing angles but thats on all 14" so dont have much choice. If anything if u look from slightly higher the screen looks brighter and easier to spot enemies in dark corners lol -
yup same here the grainy quality was wierd at first but now im used to it. The viewing angles is what bothers me the most ... when im watching a movie depending on how im sitting or leaning i have to keep changing the lcd position so i can see clearly.
-
Aaaahh.. now I get what people have been asking about grainy effect... man I never really noticed anything until now
I've never had a notebook or LCD screen for that matter... so didn't really understand what ppl were talking about.... now I do.. doesn't matter too much to me ,coz I don't really notice it... my eyes are not as trained as some people I guess -
Yeah my w3j is grainy too...at first I was disapointed, but I've gotten used to it and now it doesn't bother me.

Antioch isn't very close to Fremont. At least an hour away.

I think you guys are misusing the term "grainy". In the S96J's case, it's pixels colored differently than they should be....so a black background will look spreckled.
I think what you guys are referring to is the "shimmer" of the coating. Sorry to get into semantics. It looks like little waves in the glass. I've never noticed it while doing anything on the notebook and I don't think it distorts the image and can only be seen from an angle. My guess is that this is to lessen glare....like those slealth bombers that have no flat spots for radar to bounce off. -
oh yes then it what hyperluminous says it looks like little waves and no it doesn't distort the images...

Thanks for reassuring me. If I drop the hammer on the A8Jm, it's going to set me back ~$2500 AUD which is easily the most I've ever spent on a computer. Heck, it's quite possibly the largest personal purchase I've made in the last 5-6 years.
I'll quit my dithering about now...
:EDIT: No, I didn't double post... don't you hate it when thread mergers make you look bad? -
i got one and i feel it will never get out of date (as stupid as that sounds)
i'll put a merom in, 2gb ram, and it'll be great forever
with that video card. it's just incredible performance! -

Hi guys, I just wanted to put in my two cents. I just received my A8JM yesterday, so I've been doing not much besides having fun with my new toy. The quality of the screen blows me away! Granted, this is my first laptop, but I've personally had my hands on at least 30 different models of all sizes and quality levels from many different manufacturers, and I can honestly say that this screen is at the top of the list.
I have the WXGA (1280 x 800) glossy screen, not the optional "outdoor" TrioView Transflective display. I've found what many people say about the glossy screen to be true: if I concentrate on the reflected image and the light in the room is bright enough, the screen acts like a mirror, but if I don't think about it all I see is the image on the screen.
This LCD screen is phenomenal. The on-screen image is sharp and clear. There are no dead pixels, the brightness and contrast (once the screen is adjusted to the right angle) are perfect, the color is perfect, and I seem to have gotten a screen with no light leakage. The side-to-side viewing angle is very wide. I haven't played any games or watched any DVDs yet, however.
About the "graininess" issue, I never would have noticed anything if I hadn't read about it here. When I focus on the reflected image in the screen, which I have to make an effort to do, rather than a mirror-perfect reflection there are tiny little "waves," like little ripples on the surface of water. This has absolutely no effect on the image displayed on the screen, which as I said is sharp and clear.
EDIT: With a completely black screen there is perceptable light leakage across the bottom edge of the screen. -
To increase the sharpness and contrast of text, use a little app called cleartweak. It helps a lot-
-
ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
Microsoft's ClearType Tuner ( download link here) smooths out all the edges on text etc and makes a vast improvement on lcd text.

light leakage across the bottom is a common occurence. My light leakage is fairly high, but it doesn't bother me.
