I am very interested in buying an Asus notebook. Looking at a few models. W3V looks perfect but slow drive is turning me off, I want to pop a 5400rpm drive in there. I also wish it came with XP home instead of Pro, because I am going to upgrade to Vista anyway.

Has anybody done this? Pretty easy? Any heat issues with a faster hd?

Otherwise, I think this looks like a great notebook in the $1000 range.

    Thanks

Absolutely nothing wrong with doing what you said, infact people are throwing in 7200rpm hard drives into the newer and more powerful W3J..so there will no problems with a 5400rpm in a W3V.

Your temps and heat should be the same, and even your battery life, or very very little effects to both.

Most of the W3's came with 5400rpm Hitachi's, except for a small shipment that accidentally came in around this time last year... so you can certainly do it. I've used a 7200rpm in the W3, but I'd stick with a Seagate as they run a cooler and more efficient than the Hitachi's if you happen to want to go that far.... the hard drive speed will increase performance a ton.
