mm, well the industry is sort of approaching a format wars between Blu-ray and HD-dvd....

HD-DVD and Blu-ray will soon be in notebooks (i know mitsubishi is shipping drives for desktops in march)...I was wondering if the slim drive in the v6va was a proprietary (did i spell that right?) or is it an industry format...That way when a slim HD-DVD or Blu-ray drive came out I could swap them...would this be more plausible in a z70va???

    Thanks for any help!

What possiblse use could you have for HD or blueray in a laptop? but there are other models that use the same slim drive so its not just an asus thing. but if its that important i would say the z70 is a safer bet.

I am of course. but honestly i dont see them really starting to be put into laptops for at least another year. Then the media will be crazy expensive. Backups is the only use.

The super-slim isn't proprietary...... but they basically only appear in a few laptops that Asus builds....... the W5/V6/M5 .... and a few they build for sony.

I'll tell you right now - eventually this IS the form factor that notebooks will be switching to... it's the ONLY way to shrink the thickness.... So by time blu-ray are out there for notebooks --- it's possible to upgrade. Given the cost of the 4x super multi drive in the V6va (about $375-400)....... I can only imagine what a blu-ray would cost in this form factor in say a year.....

My guess is they are still at least a year away from notebooks at all........ but it's something that could be easily retrofitted down the road when they come out and then get down in price... but by then you may be looking for a new laptop.

The super slim drives are on ThinkPads T series and some HP business class notebooks as well. I think Toshiba was showing off some laptops with HD-DVD reading drives not too long ago. They were most likely not the super slim drives though.

Right now and for the last two years--- only panasonic was making these super-slim 9.5"mm drives.......... but I noticed in the last 3-4 months some of the Z33's have been coming with Toshibia combo drives.
