I need a few crucial questions answered so I can decide between these Asuses, a Macbook, or HP dv2000t:

Are the w7j and/or z35f made out of carbon fiber? What prices are these notebooks currently slated to be sold for? When are they going to be released?

    Many thanks for answering.

both of those models do have carbon fiber chassis'.

The W7j is going slated to be $1,499 - that price is what we were given on our price sheet, but that would put it under the cost of the W5 and that's close to unbelievable.... so I'd say $1,499 is technically the slated price, but we think there may have been a mistake and it *may* be as high as the W3 and W5 are at $1,799..... so somewhere in between is certainly safe.... $1,599 - $1,649 is honest probably where it *should* fall.

Yea, I was checking out your site earlier and I couldn't believe it either. Any info on the pricing for the z35f though? Also, is the whole thing carbon fiber, or are only certain parts of the chassis?

Carbon fiber is used on like 95% of every chassis in the W / V / S / M series... along with models like the Z35. There isn't much to the computers to begin with, but the bottom chassis (that part that holds the motherboard), the palmrest, and the lid are carbon fiber. Certain models have aluminum on the palmrest or the lid, but the big weight savings and structure of the system comes from the bottom case which is the lower half under the palmrest...... that is carbon fiber on all of the ensembles (outside of the A series) and has been for 3 years now.

.... it's actually rather hard to get the weights and thicknesses these systems have with out using carbon fiber..... so it's honestly one big way of telling what it's made out of. If a similar notebook is 5-10% heavier... or thicker... it's made simply out of plastic.... also, if it's a simliar configuration - but a lot cheaper... it's probably all plastic as well. The ONLY way to tell is to really see comparisons of the panels themselves and cutting and/or melting the plastic away to find the fine fabric underneath... so, you'll have to trust what I say and know that it's used to make systems lighter and thinner.... and if they are lighter and thinner, that's really all you need to know because it would be impossible to make them all out of just plastic and have a rigid system without a lot more weight from a lot thicker panels.

If the w7j and z35f models are almost completely made out of carbon fiber and are about 4.3 lbs (according to your site), why is the Sony SZ Series (the non-carbon fiber version) around the same weight, not to mention, the carbon fiber version of the SZ is only 3.8 lbs? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that carbon fiber is lighter than magnesium + normal plastic.

By the way, how much would the z35f barebone go for sale?

The SZ is made by Asus and the chassis is carbon fiber...... the lid is magnesium...... that small of a lid in magnesium is about the same weight as carbon fiber - but it's very suseptible to dings and dents....... "carbon fiber editions" and things of this nature are for visual impact and are composites of CF in epoxy resin instead of abs resin....... any type of resin is a plastic.....

I couldn't tell you what a Z35f barebone would sell for.

Interesting that you guys brought this up. Last time Proportable said that the W5 uses a Carbon Fiber Composite which is a combination of carbon fiber with plastic. Now you're telling me that it's pure carbon fiber? I'm confused.

Yea, and the carbon-fiber edition of the SZ clearly isn't just for "visual impact." It weighs half-a-pound less than the SZ that is advertised to have no carbon fiber. The non-carbon fiber SZ, which actually has a magnesium base, weighs the same as the supposedly carbon-fiber W7J.
