    Hello All

I was looking at the new offering by ASUS the M50S - A1. There from what i read from reviews, that 6 cell battery doesnt just cut it, hence recommend the 9 cell

I visited the recommended sites for the ASUS resellers and found the option of the "Spare Battery" so are we upgrading from 6 cell to 9 cell for $159 or buying a new one? So we will be having two batteries?

Also does the 9 Cell battery stick out....(sorry if i missed this on your reviews!)

    cheers
    MadEngineer

The 6 cell battery will come standard with the laptop whether u but the 9 cell battery or not. If you purchase the 9 cell battery, then you'll have 2 batteries total (one 6 cell and one 9 cell).
And yes, the 9 cell battery does stick out ;)

David, I see in your signature that you have a MacBook Pro. How does it compare to the Asus M50Sv in performance, graphics, and screen? Thanx.

Well, it's hard to compare since I only use OSX on my MBP and use it solely for office apps and photoshop. But overall, the MBP is a lot faster due to the OS, and like any MBPs, the screen is excellent! (just run down to your nearest apple store and check it out! I'm sure you'll love it :) ) In terms of graphics performance, mine is stocked with a watered-down 8600m GT 128mb GPU. Still pretty decent, but it's not as good as the 9500m GS in the m50sv. The thing that i love most about the MBP is the backlit keyboard and being virtually maintenance free (ie no antivirus software needed or drivers to search for etc). One thing that bothers me about the MBP is the amount of heat it radiates from the bottom (and only the bottom) - will probably sterilize you if you leave it on your lap for longer than 15 minutes.

From Wiki: "Chrysotile asbestos, like all other forms of industrial asbestos, has produced tumors in animals. "

    Lead is also poisonous.

And how do you know his name is David? XD Sorry for being so nosy.

Im pretty sure he knew that lead & asbestos are bad for you and thus why he chose those 2 materials to be sarcastic.

If you really wanted insulation you could just make some water cooled undies and plug them into the usb port to power them :p

Lol, sorry, my bad. Back to OP's question!!

If it was me, I would just stick with 1 battery since I don't travel much and the only time i would need the battery is when I'm taking notes in class.

LOL--that was much more creative than my initial suggestion. :)

But as to the original post....when my 6 cell battery begins to weaken I will purchase a 9 cell, making the 6 cell my back-up. Yes, I wish it would have come with the 9 cell as an initial upgrade option.

how long is that the battery weekens...

I have never owned a laptop so how do you measure the health of a battery?

And what is roughly time to live of ASUS battery if you are gonna use it approx 12-14 hrs a day (most of the time plugged in!)

    Cheers

If the battery does not have issues (like e.g., the V6J or V1 batteries), and you discharge it sometimes, it will probably last at least 2 years. The max charge will slowly degrade in this time, of course, but the effects of this degradation shouldn't be significant in the first two years.

Do the new ASUS laptops still have the battery meter problem? I read a thread about ASUS laptops and how they grossly underestimate the amount of charge left in the batteries and shut down the laptop when there's really 35% charge left...I think it might have been one of the stickies.

I guess Asus fixed the problem? It wouldn't be surprising since it was a pretty big problem. It gave Asus a pretty bad reputation of extremely poor battery life.

so uhh.... emporium, which one do you prefer? your MBP or your M50Sv? lol

haha... hard to say really. Both are excellent machines, but I've lately I've been spending most of my time on the m50sv since that's my newest toy :D

That battery problem was only affecting very specific models. It's been fixed for the V1S (or so I hear, see the V1S Battery Wear thread). The V1J, V6J, R1F, and R1E are still suffering from it. No other model is suffering from it AFAIK (there were some possible candidates but it was all unconfirmed; and all of those are now EOL anyway).
