I've searched around, found references to people trying to add it, but I haven't gotten a definitive answer.

I guess I could open it and check, but I'd like it if I could know before hand.

Yes, it can. All G50 series notebooks have 2 hard drive compartments. The G50V-X1 comes with only 1 hard drive installed, so you can install an extra hard drive if you wish.

Word of caution: you need an extra hard drive caddy to properly secure the second hard drive. They're still out of stock at the Asus estore, but people have improvised by using foam and other household materials to secure the hard drive is place.

Thanks for the quick response, I appreciate your help!

Do you think something like this would suffice? I know they aren't the same, but if they're equivalent, then I can use it.

If the G50V is built the same way the G50VT is, then nope. No way. That caddy in you picture has a cable hanging out of it.

The internal drive caddies on the G50VT don't have cables at all. They literally "plug-in" to the SATA interface without a cable.

That isnt a cable, its a tag to help pull it out.

The G50VT looks to be exactly the same as my G50V. I have a feeling that thebeephaha was right, because the site said that if cables were included they would be mentioned.

That said, is the HD bracket on G50VT similar to the pictured one?

No it's not. As mentioned previously, you won't be able to use a G1S HDD caddy on the G50

Please see the G50 disassemble guide that I've posted.

On another note, the G50V and the G50Vt are the exact same chassis with the exception of screen size.

    Won't that null the warranty?

So adding a hard drive won't, its just if you want to install a new CPU or RAM?

Adding a new internal hard drive will not void your warranty.

Adding a new CPU will void your warranty.

Adding/changing RAM will not void your warranty.

Thanks, linuxguy and David for the help.

Can you recommend any brands/type[SATA 1.5 or 3.0?, OEM or not?] that'll play nice with my laptop? Sorry if it's an ignorant question, but I couldn't find that info on newegg.

    No problem :)

What hard drive capacity are you looking for and are you planning to use RAID?

I'm looking for 200-500GB, probably 200. I wasn't really planning on RAID. Would that change which harddrive I bought?

If you plan to use RAID, you must have 2 identical hard drives. But since you're not, it won't apply to you :)

I'd recommend the WD 320GB 5400RPM as this is one of the better 320gb drives with a lower average latency or the WD 500GB 5400RPM if you need the extra capacity.

Thanks again for walking through the steps with me, I think I'll go with the 320.
