I've got a quick update. I physically had not thrown a 9 cell W5 battery into the my W7 until today when I started my funky W7 project... Regardless, Asus moved the connector and on the laptop and the batteries won't work. This change had to come after the demo stage because I swear we fit the batteries in because Asus didn't ship any with the demo. Anyway, physically the batteries will be slightly different and therefore will take longer to come in from Taiwan, but the life will be the same as expected and they will physically be as long and as deep as the W5's 9 cell, that'll just have different attachment points to the system itself.

Any idea why they would bother to do that? If they're the same, seems like a pretty crappy design to just move the connections around..

Well, quickly looking at some pictures of the batteries, the w7j has no feet on the battery, while the w5f (or whatever model it fits) battery does. Also, it could be that they had to move the dc-dc converters around to shoehorn every last thing they wanted in there. It looks like they put the HD way up front and dropped it lower than the mobo.

On another note, I think it may be a good thing, as you would be sure that you're getting new cells in your battery instead of old stock left over from models that didn't sell too hot. Batteries that sit on shelves in the heat of a warehouse are not good. So, it may be a help that the physical format has changed.
