Quietest Asus gaming laptop?

I'm looking to replace my W2V with most likely a 15.4" Asus laptop that retains the high quality screen and build quality of my W2V while improving on the noise factor, which is just friggin awful on the W2V.

VS1 - the reviews of the V1Jp say it's noisy, does this translate to the VS1?
F3S - runs cool and not a ton of noise, maybe this is my best bet?
C90 - unknown here, is it cool when using the 8600 GT?

 

I think the F3S is your best bet... I recall reading that the C90 has some noise issues, too.

If I'm wrong... C90 users, please correct me.

 

Neither the F3 (budget model) or C90 (whitebox with giant fans) will have the same build quality of the W2.

There is no VS model in Asus' lineup. Do you mean the VX2 or the V1S? The latter is simply a minor update of the same chassis shell (i.e. the W2V and W2j).

Keep in mind, obviously, that "noise" is a very personal and subjective matter. I don't remember anyone ever talking about the W2 being a loud system - have you cleaned the heatsink and fan lately since the notebook is now, what, 3 years old? Blockage there would increase the sound level.

 

THanks Clearskies. Yes, I meant the V1S. What's the conventional wisdom on the V1S... same as the V1Jp it sounds like?

The noise on the W2V has definitely gotten worse since I purchased it. How would I clean out the heat sink? Open up the chassis and vacuum?

 

Never ever do that (thou i did it before, had some luck). They say it might cause a static electric thingi and might short circuit the board... try compress air.. but last time i use compress air, the air after shot out from the can condense the water vapor in the air, and thus resulted water on my laptop (lucky it's just the keyboard). What i would do is complete dissemble the fins out and clean it (do it only if it doesnt void ur warrenty)

 

The C90 is deinitely not quiet. It's not so much that it was a design flaw that it makes so much noise as it was just something expected. There are 4 40mm fans in the "turbo engine" and even when they're not on full power they still make some decent noise. And everytime my engine kicks in at like a lan aprty or even just hanging with friends everyone in the room looks at me

But I don't consider it a problem because of all the performance those fans allow me to have. How important do you consider noise when buying a laptop? Keep in mind that many gaming laptops will produce more noise than a non gaming laptop so maybe you should really rethink what you want.

 

Yeh, I've been thinking maybe I can't find a laptop that's quiet and able to play games. I guess I'm wondering if I can get somewhat decent gaming capability while still having a relatively quiet laptop.

Although the build quality won't be up to my W2V standards, I'm thinking maybe the F3S is the way to go, sort of middle of the road between gaming capabilities while still apparently being relatively quiet/cool.

My W2V CPU gets up to 60C while surfing the web. If I throttle it down, it'll hover around 55C or so. I think I saw the F3S specs around 40C when surfing the web, my guess this woudl make for a quieter laptop.

 

Definitely you should clean the fans on the W2V if they've never been cleaned in 3 years it's going to be horror what you'll find in there.

You should take out the fan and ensure access to the ventilation grill/fins. The fan itself will have a nice coating of dust but the main thing will be the dustclog between the fan and the fins. Both have to be cleaned.

Look for a disassembly guide for your model, maybe you find one. If you're lucky the fan is easily accessible from a panel on the belly of the notebook, or under the keyboard. In the worst case you'll need to take the notebook apart (like I did with my M6BNe) but let's hope it's not so.

About the F: the build quality isn't going to come close to the W, but ASUS budgets are still decently built.
