I have a W7S thats just running a 1 gig stick + 512 mb internal. I want either a 2 or 4 gig ram in the machine but I'm not sure which type fits for my laptop. I think its been said that a 4 gig stick is only recognized as a 3 gig in W7S, whats the deal with that?
Brands I'm considering for the RAM are OCZ or Corsair.
Thanks in advance.
Just wanted to upgrade my laptop since it died and I sent it in to get fixed. Probably gonna have a new motherboard on, so might as well upgrade a little too.
Anyone interested in what happened to my laptop, check here:

Trust me, its worth the visit.

I have not heard that mentioned, but I would be wary of buying a 4GB stick before I knew it worked. I'm sure they did not test the laptop with such a large stick.
The 3GB limitation may be due to the 32 bit OS, BTW. -
That's actually mentioned on the Asus spec sheet for the W7S. But I would still be skeptical using a 4gb stick. The PM965 chipset can support 4gb, but given you have a 512mb on board memory, 4.5gb may cause an unstable system. I remember upgrading a 2gb stick on my W7S without any issues, so you're definitely safe with that.

Ok, so 2 gig it is. Whats the best type to use for W7S then? Single slot only, I see like DDR2, DDR, etc. Which ones are actually for laptops or are desktop RAM compatible?

You could try out a 4GB module later, when prices fall. The Santa-Rosa platform can address upto 8GB, but BIOS support is necessary. -

I've added a Corsair 2GB stick on my W7S and it has been working great without any problems for the past year.
I'm on 64-bit Vista and was considering adding a 4GB stick but as mentioned above it might be a bit of a problem, and it costs at least $150 at the moment.
Be careful if you buy a RAM with a heatspreader (like the G-Skill one) as it might not fit due to the way it's mounted.
