Many retailers have been selling the S96J's for quite some time and I do feel it lacks good looks completely. It looks pretty bad in my opinion, but it's very cheap (~1400$ CAD before tax) for some amazing specs. I'm wondering if anyone has seen a good review on one with many pictures of its looks.

I've seen those two before.. The thing that bothered me the most was that the back of the LCD panel seemed really empty. I didnt see any with the "Built on ASUS" logo. The back panel was just plain empty. Oddly enough Symetrikal's laptop does have an ASUS logo on it. It's very strange.

Its supposedly to have a customizable lid design to it, as part of the VBI models.

I've seen both your models and they look a bit plain due to the customizable lid. Im afraid that buying one of those customizable VBI picture thing will look ridiculous on the laptop. I'm afraid it'll look like one of those cheap posters you stick on your wall, but this time its on your pc.

Haha..there is some truth to that, but I guess we'll never really know for sure until we see one. I'm sure it's not THAT bad... otherwise, they wouldn't do such a thing.

That's the thing I'm most afraid of. I think it was a ridiculously stupid thing to make a display like this. I think it would've been cheaper and could've sold beter if it just had an "Built On ASUS" logo on it. I mean how much could one of those cost to make? 3$?

Well, if it's only $3 make it yourself and stop complaining.

And on the lid there IS a built on sticker, look at symetrikals journal.

Actually it looks like the Z96J but you sorta do get the feeling something is missing...The LOGO :S Idk if I will buy it anymore, it does look like a cheapoo, but hopefully there will be some nice VBI pics that will add on it..

often on barebones models, the manufacturing company don't send it with the label, so that companies can put their own labels (e.g. msi notebooks). it is dependent on the reseller whether or not you get the little sticker. if you don't, it may be possible to call another reseller for it.

One of the reasons I'm buying the s96j is because the lid is so plain looking. I like the simple clean look of it.

I agree. I also like the fact that people do not know it is an Asus.

that VBI custom lid is kinda nice i'm just afraid i would get tired of looking at the design after a while. My friend had an xps that he could slid inserts into and he stopped using it after a while. But the plain cover just seems odd. I look at it and think it must be a pre sales model that is given to retailers to test or something.

It doesn't come with the "built on Asus" badge, I bought mine off ebay. It came with a sticker to put on the palmrest too, but I didn't use that one. it was like $2.

What's cool about the lid is that you can get them to make one from any picture you send them. I'm thinking about trying out one of the Chicago Skyline at night. Since I'm from chicago and I love my city. IF you don't like it, they're easily removable, Supposedly.

No that's the wrong thing. It's more of a badge than a sticker. It comes on most "Built on" notebooks, except the VBI's. If you can find it, GET IT! it makes the laptop look much better, especially since its the same colors as the chassis, silver and black. I'll look around and let you know if I find anything.

Anyone able to give me a price comparison between a similary configured S96j and a Z96j in a month or so?

    Maybe this:

    2.0 Core Duo
    2g 667 Ram
    100gig 5400rpm or 7200rpm

Maybe 1600 for the S and 1800 for the Z?

It's MUCH cheaper to buy the ram from a retailer like newegg than from the laptop reseller.
