I just configured my G50vt-A2 with Raid 0 a few hours ago. And now it seems to click more (and louder?) than it did before. Is this normal for a raid 0 setup? I don't remember hearing any noticeable clicks before, granted I have only had this laptop for a few days. I may just be paranoid, and besides it is night time hear and everything is quiet so maybe that is why I notice it. But the HDs were clicking pretty frequently/ constantly while I was downloading a file in firefox.

well, in raid0, both disks do the same work together => 2x as much noise as if you would only access a single disk.
besides that, on raid0, don't forget to set up a good backup sheme (at best one that you don't have to do manually) -
Well I used the the instructions and recomendations of ViciousXUSMC in his G50V review here http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=283137 . It seems like with two partitions, the second partition DATA will not get erased if I ever need to reinstall Vista again. Also, does anyone know if I can switch off raid 0 at anytime if I choose, without having to reformat both drives?
BTW, I am fine with the clicking, as long as it is normal for raid0. -
I have the same laptop as you and I came from a G50v-a2 into this one... My G50v did not have the clicking but my new G50vt does... I had both in a raid 0.
I would say its normal because it seems to just be these drives... Some drives do make odd sounds. It also does only seem to make the sound on idal or light loads because if I do big transfers or something I dont hear the drives.
Anyway, to answer your other question, the 2 partitions is smart, I always do that, but as far as turning raid 0 off... You will loose all data on all partitions and drives when you remove or create a raid 0.
Thats just how the raid works. So as someone else said, make sure you do decent back-ups of you data in case a drive ever does fail...
Most people dont have the guts to do raid 0 in a notebook but hey I did too... what can I say, I want every drop of power from this bad boy! -
Are there significant difference in battery life between using Raid 0 or not using it? G50's battery life isn't exactly amazing.

I honestly do not mind losing my data, as all my music is always on mp3 player anyways, and the only other important data I have are documents and pictures, which I can easily transfer to my mp3 player also.
Quicklite, I can not comment on battery life, since I never run on batteries. But I guess I can try it out sometime. I know I did a battery test the day I got it, and it ran just over 2 hours with wireless on and word processing/ internet research. -
I have my G50vt-A2 in Raid 0 and I hear some clicks here and there as its writting. Now I always backup my documents folder to a NAS i have setup but you should be backing up your info for safe keeping to play it safe. Now its true if you loose one drive you loose all of your data but a single drive can fail also and loose your data. Now there is an argument that with two hard drives chances are higher but you can also say, a non-raid HD will work twice as hard then a raid 0. So it comes down to what you want but honestly I dont pay much attention to the remarks about looseing your data. It can happen to any drive in any time. You should backup your documents to play it safe.
