In the BIOS, I set the DVD drive to boot before the hard drive.
Usually, on a PC this results in a message when a bootable CD is
present, "Press any key to boot from CD..." that displays for
    several seconds.

In the case of the N82JV, I usually see nothing during a reboot
until I see "Windows is starting". Occassionally, but not every
time, I'll see the ASUS splash screen, but never the "press any key".

However, if I stare at the CD activity light during a reboot, wait
for about 2 seconds of activity, and then touch a key (space bar),
    it will boot the CD.

So it's *acting* like that message is displayed, but not displaying it.
I'm not using a monitor so this on the laptop screen itself. Nothing.

I even tried using the BIOS boot direct option to boot directly
into the CD. No joy unless I again wait for the light and press a key.
