When I first boot into W8.1 the fan is quiet or off..Then a few seconds later...BOOM! It gets louder despite the temp being under 45 degrees Celsius. Even when left idle for minutes the fan won't stop, restarts don't seem to affect the fan either.

I tracked down one cause to Intel's buggy DPTF drivers, but every version I found from Asus, Lenovo, Dell, and station drivers all have the same issue. Actually I found some other threads where dptf causes thermal & fan issues, Sadly once I uninstall DPTF the fan noise is worse, likely 100% speed. And does anyone here know what devices in Device Manager relate to fans?

These devices are also missing drivers:

    Intel(R) 8 Series SMBus Controller - 9C22
    Intel(R) 82802 Firmware Hub Device
    ACPI\INT33A0\0

Have you tried updating the BIOS? I had a very similar problem with my Vaio SVE14 where the fan would throttle and stay throttling and then it would shut-off.

I have the latest bios for it. The fan was quiet on Windows 8, then after 8.1 it became louder at idle.

    Hmm.. odd.

Have you tried updating the chipset drivers?

I have the latest drivers for every device in device manager. Something is triggering the fan after boot because while I type the password on the lockscreen there is literally no noise, then once I log in it goes crazy.

It really does sound like a driver issue. Windows 8.1 has been known to cause several problems with laptops prior it's existence. Even Windows 8 ones.

Is it possible to roll back to WIndows 8? That should solve the problem.

Yes, the laptop came with a recovery partition on the drive.

Be sure to touch base with Asus support about it. It sounds like Intel needs to get with OEMs to solve the quirk.

I emailed their tech support about, all of their recent Asus books use an old version of DPTF...Lenovo's Yoga line suffers from issues relating to DPTF as well

    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-W...s-up-with-DPTF-amp-Yoga-machines/td-p/1311385

OEMs are always using ancient & buggy drivers, this wouldn't be an issue if Intel had their version of DPTF on their website. And this is a similar thread with another Asus.

True, OEMs tend to not keep up with driver revisions. I see what you mean by the prevalence of the issue, too. Has Asus support had anything constructive to say about it since you contacted them?

I'll probably have to wait awhile for help. I also informed them of the Intel HD frequency bug. PCs with the 4xxx HD line do not drop to their min freq, my 4400HD only uses 599Mhz instead of 200MHz (this likely inflates the temp as well). I have seen other computers that have the same driver bug, and this is due to the Intel HD drivers however, Intel is not fixing this bug.

I had the same problem with my S301LA

I downloaded this little application: Notebook Fan Control

    Set the fan to nil.

Turn the fan on only when needed (rarely)

The application opens with Windows at start-up and the CPU temperature sits in the Taksbar

Rarely goes above 55 degrees, with 100 degrees being the published limit for my processor

Hope this helps to remove a very irritating problem for you
