also i have the options that say
Radio Band: Standard 20Mhz
Wide 40MHz Channel (it then has an option of 1-9 for "Wide Channel")

Longer distance, less throughput. It also depends a lot on the type of router though. Check out this website: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ -

thanks for the site joekr, really useful.

It's sad (or happy how you look at it), that I have a four "generic-budget" home-built PC's for LAN parties with AMD X2 5600+ and ATI 4850's (all running stock) and my new G51Vx-X3A easily out scores them in 3DMark06 when the X3A is OC'ed...

Kermee, how's it been as far as temperature wise for you and this comp??? I'm looking to buy the exact same one off of newegg for some medium-to-heavy gaming, but have concerns about the overheating aspect. I know that it's a beast and deal with whatever game I throw at it, but I'm interested to know if you've had any problems. I'm torn between this and the new gateway fx 7915u (but it seems it'll never come out). I really like the screen on this as well, and any input you have on that would be helpful as well...Thanks!

Stock configuration, idle temperatures of the CPU and GPU are between 38C-40C for the CPU and 61C-63C for the GPU. I haven't seen a GPU temperature go above 90C yet, but when it does, the CPU/GPU fan kicks into high gear.
I haven't noticed any stability issues while running 3DMark06 and Vantage, or for the two hours I played "Torchlight" last evening.
Yes... there is a fair amount of heat which exits the exhaust on the left, but that's a GOOD thing. I've measured power-consumption of the X3A to be about 35W during normal web/e-mail/word-processing with a dip to about 30W when the brightness of the LED LCD turned down all the way and idling. Maximum power consumption during Prime95 (Orthos) & FurMark running (stock settings) is around 105W.
Overall, out-of-the-box, the X3A is performing quite well. Maybe some other users have some other "heat" related experiences they can offer since I've only had 48 hours with my X3A, but generally I'm extremely happy with it. This X3A compliments my ASUS 1810T with the X3A being the "workhorse gaming/work machine" with the ASUS 1810T for "limited work/web/e-mail/IM, etc. machine". The X3A replaces my older Dell Latitude D630 (T8300/4GB/1440x900/500GB 7200/nVIDIA Quadro NVS 135M)... which I couldn't really game on at all.
Hope this info helps, but generally... I haven't had issues with heat so far. Ambient temperature of my home and at the office is between 68F to 70F (about 20C to 22C).

Hi guys.
I have bought the same laptop from newegg.ca
It seem to be a very interesting laptop.
I would like to know if we can upgrade some part of it. I know we can for the CPU but is it possible with the GPU too (if we r not looking at hotting problem)
Just want to know if its possible. because my old toshiba, it wasn't possible. The GPU bios was inside the system bios itself.
Thanks and sorry for my poor English -
No. you cannot upgrade the GPU.
-
Thanks for the info.
Care to explain a bit why? socket differency? bios of the system linked to this gpu? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The GTX 260M is the fastest card made on the Asus proprietary socket. Future GPU's released by Asus will not be supported because of lack of system BIOS support. No there will not be a BIOS update to support future cards beyond the G92b.
-
Thanks for the info
-
FYI- After about 4 hours of "Torchlight" (maxed out settings) with HWMonitor running in the background, the 260M registered the highest temperature of 89C. Everything stock.
Cheers,
Kermee -
I'll have to get it and compare undervolted temps

Anyone know of the X3A is capable of handing 8GB of RAM?

I wonder what he's going to do with 8GB RAM.

Wow. I guess your need really does follow with the title of the thread. You're torn and temped to upgrade because of that memory usage.
-
lol wth is that. it's a crude reference to [removed by me so i dont get banned, but it references a popular shock site on the internet with .cx end title] and for that i think it'll be banned.
and no its not just me, i showed to to a friend and he thought the same thing -_- -

What are you talking about? It's just a Kermit puppet with his hands in the hole where the puppeteer's hand goes. I'm implying a paradox because Kermee is also a NBR user here, not some nasty crap you're always thinking about.
-
well that is one way you put it, although to most ppl it doesnt look that way. more likely it looks like the rear end of the puppet and thats how you get teh reference.
whatever, im no picture inspector so i dont want to spur up some stuff to get me perma-banned. -
Hi Kermee, thanks for providing your sort of mini-review of the G51Vx-X3A, I have one on order because of it.
I saw that you ghosted or created an image of the hard drive (I don't know the correct term) then re-installed Win 7, what is the benefit of doing that?
Also, can you get audio output from the HDMI port or do you need a separate audio cable for sound output?
Thanks! -
HDMI does audio and video.
-
^^^ What he said
Course, there's TOSLINK and a headphone jack if you so desire too
--- I just made a Ghost image of the drive just in case if I ever decide to sell it, I can put the OEM restore partition and OS partition back on for the new owner. Plus it's easier for me to install what I want with a "blank" slate on the OS vs. trying to remove bloatware.
It's been a couple weeks with my X3A now and I'm still extremely happy with it.
Cheers,
Kermee -
I am trying to find out, because this is my first computer with HDMI and not sure if they all have audio supported. Is there something specific to look for in the specs to know for sure or is it a given with the Geforce 260?
-
The CPU runs quite cool..but is it ok for the GPU to hit 89c? I was paranoid about 82c with my m9750, I'm considering this laptop, but need to see some benchies
-
I'm probably going to buy this laptop next week from newegg.ca just doing some final comparison against T500, XPS16, N51VN
Just few questions here,
1. Is this laptop not useable without a laptop cooler?
2. Does anyone know/have tried putting i7 processor on X3A and it works or not? (for future upgrade. will probably OC the P8700 for a while)
3. Is there a reason why I can't find this version of laptop other than newegg?
Thanks in advance -

2) No
3) No important reason -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Elaboration:
1: It can be used without a notebook cooler, but be careful to stress test to determine how hot you run. With some simple mods and replacing the thermal paste temperatures are bearable. Of course, I would always recommend an active cooler.
2: Completely incompatible. Different sockets, different chipsets, etcetera.
3: X-versions are either Best Buy or Newegg exclusives. -
Was wondering if I should upgrade to this, but seems it wouldn't be much of a difference from what I already have. Can't afford the G51J variety with the i7 either...
-
Honestly, with the machine you currently have, I don't know how much of an upgrade from a 9800M GS to a GTX260M would be... The other specs are virtually the same sans the 1680x1050 panel on the G50VT-X6... If I were you, I probably wouldn't upgrade to this model.
Cheers,
Kermee -
Yeah, just going by the 3DMarks its not worth the $300 difference it would cost me. The high res would be ing sweet for my 3D CAD programs though
Really torn/tempted by the G51Vx-X3A... HELP!
