Why does Asus use Realtek HD Audio? This has to be the worst audio chip I've ever heard. Makes almost all my music sound bad and volume is just bad. Currently listening at 100% volume while writing this and it's just not enough.

Also have a Toshiba of a family remembers and it sounds much much better. Louder and far more clear. It's got the Intel HD Audio and they are not in the same league.

Which sound alternative do you guys suggest? Looking at Creative X-fi Notebook Express Card.. Got a 5300e series from Logitech and will use them.

    Any suggestions?

Yes, Realtek is the poor one I used, my old first laptop DELL 6400 also better than this, special the volume on DELL just need 25 is very loud, but on Asus G1S, must using 100 :-(

Looks like my C90S has better speaker even if it's the same card. 50% is already freaking loud, except if I have it on my laps (witch blocks the sound)

C90 is a barebones? From what I read it seems like it is. The bad thing is with the headphones and the speakers themselves are nice but volume through the headset is real low.. Realtek just plain sucks! Went to every Big Box store in my area and none of them have the X-fi Notebook. Dell gets another order..

    Actually.....
The sound quality is good, its need some configuration within the RealTek software.
Set the Environment option to Carpeted Hallway. And if you want even more quality, set the Equalizer to Soft (as in Soft Rock)

Only comparison is to the Intel HD Audio and theres a difference.. Laptop speakers are nice and sound full range. Just need more volume from headphones. Trying the Carpeted Hallway and EQ: Powerful. See if that helps. Just hope the X-Fi will be louder and more of what I'm accustomed to... Any other quality alternative to the X-Fi Notebook Card?

Hmm im using the X-Fi Notebook Card with a 5.1 speaker system, its loud and have powerful bass, i was looking for other external soundcards too but the others are all PCMCIA cards. You could get an optical input speaker if u dun wanna use an external soundcard, but speakers with optical input would be quite expansive but the sound and sound quality is superb.

It still has that same audio chip. There are 2 pci-e port though (1 for wireless and 1 for tv tuner but can still be used for an audio card I think)

I havn't been too concerned with the Realtek HD Audio in any of my laptops. This could be because I just use the optical out to my Z-5500 speakers. I havn't really used the analog output on my laptops, has anyone else used the optical out and found it to be alright like myself.

Reading the last post is a new understanding. Bought a laptop to be portable. When the time is needed. Quality of Audio is bad when using it itself. Not as a pass through. Got 5300e's and now waiting on my X-fi. Need quality! Not a an external source to fix Audio problems. Though I do see where your coming from. Great speakers and use audio as a pass through but when I'm not using external source. It's just bad. If I couldn't get a fix for it. Asus would be returned and would lean towards another company. Audio and webcam are just plain garbage. The webcam is 1.3 but my MSI 1.3 370i puts this webcam in the closet and closes the door. So two of the mobility options of laptop are no good. Begins to make me wonder.
