Ok, I recently purchased a g50Vt-X5 and I'm having problems with the recovery disks. I wanted to do a clean install of vista, so I used the recovery disk to load the OS without the extra programs that were already on the computer. I ran the recovery disk and the driver disk, however the system is not working the same as before.
Ever since recovering, my windows rating index has dropped from 5.0 to 1.0 The processor, RAM, and Hard Disk have the same values as before, however both the graphics and gaming graphics ratings have dropped to 1. This leads me to believe the drivers for the graphics card did not install properly, or I messed it up somehow. Also, I have been unable to connect to wifi since recovering, so I can't go and find the proper drivers or do windows update. Other features like the touchpad, direct console, expressgate, and OLED have also stopped functioning.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I've only had the computer for a short while and I deeply regret trying to recover the system at all, I had no problems before.

The first step would be to go to Device Manager and see what has a yellow exclamation point next to it. You can find all of the drivers for Vista here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?model=G50Vt(BestBuy)&SLanguage=en-us
Edit: If you can't get online, just pop in the drivers disc, and all of the original drivers are on there inside folders. -
Thanks for the quick response. I was looking forward to following your guide to disabling the LED's, but that is the least of my concerns right now.
Alright, there are caution signs next to:
Network Adaptors>Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)
Other Devices>
-Base System Device
-Base System Device
-Base Sytem Device
-Network Controller
-Unknown Device
Is there anything I can do to reinstall the network adaptor without accessing the internet? Is there some aspect of using the recovery disk that I neglected? The biggest problem I have is that I can't download the driver from the asus website since I have no way to connect. Also, when I try to update the driver from the device manager, it says that I have the most recent version. -

OK, you are definitely missing your intel chipset drivers, the ethernet driver, and I'm not sure what else the unknown device is. The intel chipset driver installer is called the INF Update Utility. I just edited my last post since I realized you don't have a net connection. The drivers for wireless, NVIDIA graphics, ethernet, and the OLED are on folders inside the drivers CD. Run the INF Update utility first, then install the wireless and anything else you need. It'll require a few reboots at least.

Er, I think I was just being stupid with the recovery process. I figured when it prompted me to insert the driver DVD during the recovery that it would install the drivers and essential software. I don't think that was the case now. It doesn't list any of my drivers as being up to date, and would also explain the loss the the direct console and expressgate features. I'm just going to reinstall all the drivers and software except some of the more useless programs just to play it safe. I'll post an update once the installation has finished, maybe sooner.
Thanks for your help thus far, I've been lurking in the X5 owner's lounge for a while trying to familiarize myself with the notebook, and I've seen that you are one of the more prolific and knowledgeable contributors there. -

It definitely should have installed at least the default drivers, maybe something went wrong but it probably wasn't your fault. Doing a recovery should bring you back to a usable desktop after the process is complete. Hopefully installing them manually works, but I'd definitely get the latest drivers instead of using the ones from the CD once you have net access.

Alright, the installation finished. I can connect to my wireless router, and I'm back up to a 5.1 rating. I'm going to go ahead and install all the latest drivers, as per your suggestion. Are there any drivers I should avoid updating, or should I just download all of them?

You can get all of them, some of the utilities like asus update aren't required, it's up to you. But for all of the ATK drivers and Direct Console and everything make sure you get the latest. Also you can get the latest NVIDIA drivers directly from nvidia.com, or modified drivers from a variety of places if you want those. Most of the stuff from the download page I linked to should be installed, since it's all updates to the drivers that came on the CD.
