I was looking at the ASUS N61JV at Amazon (trying to decide between that and the MSI GE600) and I saw at the bottom of the description: "Recovery disks not included."

What gives? Is this an unfortunate trend? How do I recover/reinstall if I run into a problem? Are the install programs downloadable?

My Bestbuy G73 did not come with the disk either. Tis indeed a trend.

    Cheers,

How are we supposed to reinstall Windows or recover to the original state?

    Makes me nervous about Asus.

There's a program on the laptop that will make the recovery disks. You just need to provide your own DVDs.

Ok--that's not too bad, I guess. Thanks for the explanation!

Asus is no longer giving out restore disks with their notebooks. So instead, I'd suggest you take advantage of the hidden recovery partition and also the AI recovery utility which basically allows you to burn the recovery partition on to a DVD.

The last 4 computers I've bought (2 desktops & 2 laptops) did not come with any disks. But they all had the feature available where you could burn a set of recovery disks, using your own blank media.

I would suggest that this is one of the first things (if not THE first thing) you do, when you purchase any computer that comes with this feature.

agreed with stubby here...just make sure you burn the discs in high quality media...a few users I know had issues trying to restore their laptops from recovery disks only to find that halfway through the process there was a read error...which can have drastic effects on your machine!

Agreed. I haven't bought a machine in a long time that came with the media. Every single one of them had this "in your face jumping like a damn jackrabbit so you can't miss it" program to burn your own onto DVDs.

Last 4 computers I bought or helped friends buy did not include recovery disks but all included a software that let you burn your own.

The most insulting one was my current dell laptop that did not include a disk but insted did include a fake cardboard disk telling me that I didn't need a recovery disk anymore. That fake disk (that appreared real at first glance) managed to get my hopes up and cruch them without mercy all within a 5 seconds period.

Lol, I can't beleive they would go through the trouble to make a cardboard disk! It probably cost about the same as a disk would have. Talk about pinching pennies!

I wanted to add that you can also make multiple copies of the restore disks. I made 2 copies just in case I lost one or one didn't work. It also makes it nice to carry a copy with me without worry of ruining my only copy.

I recently bought an Asus G73JH-X3...arrived yesterday without the recovery disk.
I bought DVD-R disks to make the 5/6 disk copy for emergency but started getting error messages after the 4th disk.
I called Asus at 510-739-3777 ext.#3. Told them what happened and they are sending me the recovery disk with driver disk too.
They asked for the serial # of the laptop and asked for me to send/forward email receipt of sales from TigerDirect.

Just wanted to let you know of that option if you had problems making your recovery disks.

You probably used cheap media. I've updated the guide and recommend for DVD-R single layer media to use Taiyo Yuden. Congratulations on getting the discs. I've mentioned that to others in the past, good to see they still have some left.

    I used Memorex DVD-R (16x/4.7GB-Go/120 min).
I couldn't find if it was single layer.
I'll look for the media Taiyo Yuden...thanks.

That's a single layer disc (see highlight). The only reason that I mentioned single layer is that AI Recovery doesn't work with Double-Layer discs.

Your welcome. For reference, I use only Taiyo Yuden DVD-R (not plus) discs for single layer burning and I use only Verbatim DVD+R (not minus) discs for double-layer burning. Keep in mind that slimline laptop type drives in general aren't very good, so results may vary.

Don't most recovery media utils do a verification check? Either way, good idea to make two copies.
