It seems like it's long overdue. This Laptop got famous during the early Netbook years.

What could a refresh of this 10'' N270 Atom, 9300m GS model bring?

    My wishes;

-Decrease dimensions of the machine. It had a massive Bezel. Have an Edge to Edge Screen. Matte. Still keep it 10''

    -Resolution to 1200x800 Widescreen 16.9

    - 4 Gigs of Ram

    - SSD

    - Windows 7

    - Same powerful 6-8 Hour Battery

    - Geforce 335m with added Intel 4500MHD

    - Illuminated Keyboard

err 1200x800 isn't 16:9, and that resolution is completely messed. and there is no such thing as a matte edge-to-edge screen

I miss my N10J, sold it a few months ago.

Did you see the N10Jh? It may be the end of the N10 series... it and the Jc are out of stock most places now.

OTOH there wasn't much out of CES in terms of ultraportables from ASUS. There is no refresh to the U20 series for which I'd been hoping.

The M11x is probably the best bet for that kind of thing. I wouldn't hold your breath for an N10 refresh. If there is, I do hope they give it a backlit keyboard, and I will buy one.

No way. The GT 335M is something like 20 - 25W TDP. You want that in an undersized 10" notebook? If that were possible I'd be looking for 14.1"s with GTX 280M.

Yeah they would have to redo the chassis to be thick like the M11x to stuff a 335 in it. Not happenin'.

I think he is right though as after the 1201n came out the n10 was discontinued. The n10jh came out in what oct but did not last very long at all. I also was looking for an updated version of the ul20. I like the 12in size but need battery life. I also like the 1021n but want a bit more power. I guess the only thing for me is a good 13in then.

The HP DV2 was replaced with the DM3, and nothing has happened with the N10, so essentially the 1201 has replaced the N10.

Well there was the EEE 1000HV with ATI 3450...

I was half serious with that "question" lulz... I know what wingnut meant in terms of the niche... but a 12in is still not really a replacement for the n10. It is the size of a small textbook...

    Not a huge difference though:

    Dimension: N10J / 1201N (Difference)
    Width: 10.8" / 11.65" (0.85")
    Depth: 7.6" / 8.2" (0.6")
    Thickness: 1.4" / 1.3" (-0.1")
    Weight: 3.5lbs / 3.2lbs (-0.3lbs)

But you get a 12" screen with a usable resolution (1366x768 instead of miniscule and awkward 1024x600), a little thinner and lighter, with much better battery life. IMHO it is a good compromise.

And wasn't the 1000HV for Europe only?

There is a mountain of difference between the ATI 3450 and 335M. The 3450 has a 12W TDP.

.85 of an inch is a bit of difference when it comes to something small, but I guess they're almost, but not quite entirely unlike...

well i want a thin laptop and I think that laptop will be to thick. Plus im an asus fan a try to stay with asus. They will bring out something that I will want. For now I will use my 1005ha for now. Problem i think with the n10 is that it cost so much if you got and n10j a1 or a1. It was almost 700 bucks. for that much you could get youself a ul30vt now. It was just alot of money for a very small laptop. Now I really like the 1201n but the battery life is only 4 hrs in it.

With Optimus technology slated for the new Ion 2 (a discrete 310M GPU) the next generation 1201N will have much better battery life and far greater graphics capibility. Optimus is supposto work with Pine Trail Atoms. Wonder if that means dual atoms as well?

I love my 1201N. And if you use the Power Saver settings instead of High Performance, and keep the display brightness down, you can easily get more than 5 hours out of the battery.

The 1201N is the closest so to speak, but if you want power in a small space it seems the Alienware M11x is the best option. If you're willing to go a little bit bigger (ie 13") and have a LOT more to spend, the New Sony Z is looking pretty great. 13" with Core i7-620 and Nvidia 330GT available, alongside either 1600x900 or 1920x1080 screen, backlit keyboard, SSD mandatory, and more.

The Z is going to be around $2000 with decent specs, and up to 4000+ if you let them put in the SSDs for ya. I'd love to consider the Alienware, but it uses a sucky old Core 2 Duo ULV processor instead of the i7-620 (or i5) of the Z (which is thinner). I'll be waiting for a Refresh.

On the Asus side, I hear there might be an entry in the Bamboo series that is 11-13" with discrete graphics and an i7/i5 proc, but there doesn't seem to be much data as of yet. Here's to hoping it will have a 330/335 or 57xx/58xx instead of the lower end 310.

He said that it would come with an IGP. Possible, if they'd make the chassis thicker.

If such a 14 incher exists, it'll be up in flames in a matter of minutes.

Do you know the dimensions of M11X compared to these two(N10 and 1201N)? I wonder how much bigger, heavier M11X.

But do you think it will even matter? The 450 and 470 Atoms seems to give no performance boost in games at all! Will a next gen Atom still even be worth it?

Also, do you know if Alienware is using Optimus in their M11X? I saw a video that claimed that all current solutions to disabling the GPU in notebooks, requires to do a bios change by restarting the computer... Is even Sony Vaio Z like this?

Sony Vaio Z seems nice, but at that price, I would worry about it breaking, way way to much.

I think Asus UL30 JT sounds like a better option if it came down to it. Sure, it has a 310, and that's a rebranded 210 which is not even DirectX11 compatible if I am not mistaken? But still, it seems much more affordable.

M11X... Is there any gaming performance benchmarks for SU7300 CULV CPUs somewhere? I wonder how it handles CPU intensive games.

If they put a Core i5 or i7 into the M11X, wouldnt battery life drain be worsened significantly? More than price, what sucked about Alienware was always the horrid battery life(IMO)!

The M11x has a hotkey for changing between discrete and integrated GPU on the fly, it doesn't require a reboot and it doesn't have a hardware switch.

Yeah, but just because there's an IGP alongside the 335M doesn't mean the 335M won't set the 10" laptop on fire when it's being used.

Are you sure this is correct? Besides the Weight, this means that 1201N is longer, and N10 is more thick than the others...?

I originally got the N10J specs from Newegg, but N10J Specs from Asustek are actually a bit bigger:
    http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=cZ8YwCQUugX8duov&content=specifications (10.86 x 7.68 x 1.46 in)

    1201n from Asus:
    http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=sZ0sI6WqjnCHGFta

    And m11x from Alienware:
    http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/alienware-m11x?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn

    All OEM specs

So you can see the m11x is basically a bit deeper than the others and heavier, but all in all not entirely a huge difference than the 1201n.

for the 1201n i think they got the thickness wrong sense it seems much thinner than 1.3 sense my asus g50vt is 1.6 and putting both of them side by side the 1201n is alot thinner than the g50.

and its thinner than my acer one a150 which says that's 1.1.

i think they saying from the rubber feet stand and up than i could say its problee around 1.3 with the rubber feet but the netbook itself is much thinner.

i still would like too add the m11x too my collection :)

but think i might wait for a refresh or if some money turns up lol

the x11 is nice but i think its to big and not for 800 bucks. If you upgrade it it just starts to cost way to much. I should just wait for ion2 and a new dual core atom chip.

too me i think the price is cheep for the m11x.

even for 1170 which i maxed out it seems pretty good for what power you get out of it.

if i had a dell perfered account or the cash i problee would buy it right now for that price but don have any of those yet lol

tho i ony paid 899$ for my g50vt which is more powerful and better spec but it is also alot bigger than the m11x which why the m11x is pretty nice for how small and powerful it is :)

and i pretty much paid close to 700$ for the 1201n.. well 484$ for the netbook and just ordered wd 7200rpm 320gb black hd and 667mhzs gskill 2x2gb which should let me overclock it too 2100mhzs which should be here tomarlo hopefully ups don't skimp out again from the weather... but i think the 1201n is worth putting in those upgrades.

but ya i really don't need too much power on the road anyways sense i mainly use my gaming desktop for all my games and everything else when i am home.

but when i play when im not home i just copy the save game from the desktop and put it on my g50vt or the 1201n.

also the 1201n is about a half inch or going on 1inch by measureing with the lid close and the laptop itself not feet.

but i know why they say 1.3 because they measured from the bottom of the battery and up lol that gives around 1.3 for me doing it that way.

kinda weird why they would do it that way sense its not the netbook itself and ony its the back.

acer did the acer one right they ony did the netbook itself not the battery and they say 1.1. with the battery its around 1.5 or 1.6 sense the battery on that netbook is big.

Using your matrix, I put in my own 13'' Samsung Q320.. A fairly standard 13'' Laptop. Nothing special.

    Dimension: N10J / 1201N / m11x / Q320
    Width: 10.8" / 11.65" / 11.25" / 12.83''
    Depth: 7.6" / 8.2" / 9.2" / 9.0''
    Thickness: 1.4" / 1.3" / 1.3" / 1.3''
    Weight: 3.5lbs / 3.2lbs / 4.4lbs / 4.92lbs

I am a bit surprised that there is not a bigger difference between 10''/11'' and 13''

So looking at this, I am not sure that dropping 2'' inches down to 11'' from 13'' Will give me a siginificantly smaller chassis!?

But I am not so used to working with inches. I am more used to cm!

It's actually 11.6" for the M11x. That makes it 1.4" inches down, or about 3cm. And yes, as has been pointed out many times now, the M11x is larger than most note(net)books of that size.

Yeah, after seeing the dimensions it makes me surprised they didn't try to finagle a 13" screen in there, even if the overall dimensions had to get slightly larger. Even a 12.1" over the 11.6". I'm fine with the 11.6" but an extra 1/2" is always welcome.

Ok, that makes sense, thanks! I guess it's to be expected with a GPU like 335.

    All I am wondering now...

    Asus UL30JT vs M11X

You are going to have similiar dimensions.

UL30JT with a core i7 might be significantly stronger in CPU demanding games. Like Source games, many RTS and MMOs.. Large scale enviorment games. Console ports, since consoles have stronger CPUs than GPUs(GTA4 is a good example)

M11X with 335m will be significantly stronger in GPU demanding games. Games like Crysis! Crysis even ran somewhat on N10 due to 9300m even though it was a crappy Atom 1.6 270!

As a gamer it's actually going to be hard to choose between these two. M11X with backlight keyboard and pimp features, versus lower weight and more battery on UL30JT but with a rebranded 210m... which is not Direct X11...
According to Notebookcheck 310m is EXACTLY the same as 210m, and 310 will be the only card in the entire 300 series that is not Direct X11 Enabled...

    You gotta wonder...

I don't understand what you're saying, becaues it's 11.6" screen it makes it 1.4" thick? 11.6" screen, doesn't make it 11.6" wide either. I guess I'd just like to see someone take a physical measurement. In a couple videos I watched they said they wanted it smaller than an 8.5 x 11 inch piece of paper to ensure it would fit in people's bags, so that makes me thing the depth is wrong too.
