This post is for those unsure on purchasing an Asus W7J.

Just today got my new Asus W7J.

In my pre purchase research I found people posting the following concerns... which made me unsure of the purchase but I went ahead and found the following.

Concern: The palm rest gets hot (from the hdd).
    My experience:
Palm rest gets slightly warm, not hot and is no where near hot enough to be annoying.

Concern: Heat exhaust on right hand side is annoying.
    My experience:
Heat exhaust on right hand side hasn't been an issue and air is only warm, not very hot compared to other notebooks I've used.

Concern: Trackpad gets sticky, hard to use due to smooth surface material.
Trackpad is fine, just need to adjust the sensitivity levels.

Concern: White may get dirty after a while... may be hard to clean.

    My experience:
Looks like it won't be too hard to clean but time will tell.

Overall - build quality is pretty good. It makes my boss's Toshiba R200 seem like it is made out of plastic coated rubber.

Hope this helps anyone sitting on the fence before making a purchase ;-)

I love my w7j but there's no denying that the heat exhaust on the right side can be pretty annoying to many.

Well, can't do anything about that... it's left or right.... and same goes for the optical drive... some people like it on the left or right side and it's one or the other. When you eliminate the rear of the notebook for things like ports and exhaust - you really limit your options. However, balance and battery expandability are closer to the top of the importance list on most of Asus' notebooks...

... Of course the air coming out of the exhaust is going to be hot - if it weren't, there wouldn't be a need for the exhaust... and the more hot air coming out the less left in the system to hurt the performance and overall lifespan of the components...

So, that comes down to to placement........ if it were on the left side with the optical drive, all the ports would need to be on the right and people would complain about that. In certain situations, more people complain about having the optical drive on the right side when they're using a mouse than those same people complain about the exhaust....... having optical drive access while using a mouse is on the top of that list.

Also though.... it depends on where you actually use your mouse... now, no matter where you usually use it, it's something that the notebook isn't designed for...... now if it were to be designed without a touchpad, ok, the mouse use location would probably be top priority...... Since most people buying a notebook use the touchpad, I see it as a minor inconvenience at best - to a minority of buyers.

Thank you for your posting. Your post gets rid of my concerns. I just order the w7j few days ago. I am looking forward to have and use it.

You won't be sorry - it's one helluva machine. I've never been so happy with a computer in my life and I'm not that young.

Just took my w7j on a cross country flight for business to Canada. I got stuck in the back of a United flight so my dimensions were quite cramped. I was able to use the w7j (although barely) on my seat tray, the person in front of reclined completely. I do not see how a notebook any larger would have been useable. I have the extended battery and got around 3hours and 30 minutes doing photoshop work. I had to select a slighlty faster power 4 gear setting to get the desired speed. I manually dialed down the LCD brightness. This laptop replaced a Sony Vaio 380p. I have had few problems with it. It is modified with a 7200 rpm drive and a t2600 processor.
1gb ram was sufficient for my jobs.

    regards
