I've been looking into this beastly machine for a couple of weeks and have my heart set purchasing it quite soon. However, I recently read a review on amazon.com which although favorable, mentioned that after 6 hours of gameplay the machine started to show some difficulty.
Is this a common complaint, or was it just a problem unique to the reviewer's unit? I don't want to invest in a machine that overheats or breaks down easily.
What are your thoughts? Thanks.

ditch the G71, get teh G72 or G51. the G72 has a much nicer design, albeit with less features than the A series asus laptops get, but its much better price
erf.
my vote goes to the P8700 G72, which ever model that one is...btw only available @ best buy or how the russian call it, worst buy (one thing to look out for, no asus warranty, gonna be crappy WB warranty...) -
Should be the first review from the top, by Robert M. Swanson. What is your take on his criticism? (if you can even call it that) -
I would assume just about any laptop that has been used for gaming for 6 hours straight would have heat issues -
I have the G72 and haven't had any problems. -

Okay, this is my take on the reviewer. Keep in mind that this is his only review and he only had the notebook for one day. http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member..._pr_auth_rev?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview

lmao... brilliant critique of a critique, Soviet. I really appreciate your input, this reviewer doesn't seem very tech-savvy.
However, how do you feel about the 6-hour issue in particular? Is it something I should really be concerned about, or is it a problem likely among all gaming laptops, as VoltaicShock stated? -

Like I mentioned, he gave no details. We don't know if he was playing on a cluttered desk littered with Aion macro guides and Pringles crumbs or on a blanketed mattress scattered with Aion girl pinups. More importantly, we don't know if he even monitors his temperatures to report an exact figure. For all I'm concerned, he's probably gauging temps with his hand on the exhaust vent. For someone like you, Mace10, who is exposed to NBR, we will do our best to help you keep any notebook you own running cool enough. I can promise you that.

Personally I wouldn't run a game for 6 hours straight on my machine. It stays at a good temperature but I feel you should give it a rest every couple of hours or so (if you play that much). Or maybe I'm just being too careful.
Needless to say I wouldn't worry too much about the heat issue. For gaming I always use a notebook cooler. Only one fan on these units so I think its wise to be careful with your nice machine. -
Soviet...Wth...ever considered being a column writer?

You're probably right, 6 hours is overdoing it even for my desktop gaming rig... I don't know what I was worried about.

It doesn't really matter how long someone plays games with their notebook. It may require a notebook cooler or a few other immediate fixes on the software level, but as long as the component temperatures are kept out of the danger zone, you can pull off an Aion marathon for as long as you desire. Back in high school, I went to a few local LAN's that spanned across several hour sessions longer than six hours. This was on my M38AW so the CPU and GPU heated up more than my M570TU, but I made sure it was kept cool by using an NC1000.

I played Tribes 2 (not the most graphic intensive game) for almost 12 hours once, the computer was fine (this was my desktop)

I have played games for well over 6 hours before and my systems have always been fine. As long as your computer runs at a decent temp it should be ok. I have found that if your computer doesnt overheat in its first hour or two, it is stable and most likely will not overheat at all.
A few weeks ago I played devil may cry 4 for seven or eight hours, It happens when I get really into a good game. Many people play wow and other mmo's for hours on end. -
I'm loving my G71. I can play everything out there at native resoultion, I OC the CPU and GPU and have zero heat issues. I do use the zalman nc-2000, but if you are buying any gaming laptop, it's probably advisable to get a notebook cooler.

I will be sure to pick up a notebook cooler, thanks guys.
