Sorry to bring this issue up again; at this moment, is there any solution for remapping Fn to CTRL, so that pressing Fn + any key in Windows would have the same effect as pressing CTRL + any key?

I understand that this is hardcoded in BIOS and it would need a BIOS update to remap the keys - but I was curious if anybody found any solution that I wasn't aware of. I assume there is no hacked BIOS, like the hacked firmwares for DVD units.

It would be an interesting project for some of our resident "hackers" but I don't think finding something like that would be in the near future...

EDIT: I just remembered, though, about this utility, it is the most powerful keyboard remapping software I have used, though I haven't tested using it to change the Fn key. Try it!

I don't think mapping will work it's BIOS stuff.Though people have remapped the Capslock to Ctrl.
You'll get adjusted to it soon ;)

Well, I don't have a notebook yet, to test it on. :) I'm still considering my options, and the Asus A8Jc model that I'm very interested in has the Fn key in the corner (like most Asus models). I'm a long time desktop user and I'll be switching between desktop and laptop from time to time, so it's gonna be quite frustrating dealing with the placement of the Ctrl key. The features of the A8Jc are too good to ignore though, compared to my other options, so I'm still strongly considering it, despite the keyboard issue. It would be really nice though if the remapping was possible.

So, thanks for that utility, I'll give it a try as soon as I buy the laptop - even though, as mujtaba said, most keyboard remapping software doesn't seem to work.

Anything is worth a try though right ;-). Also those guys make the rather boisterous claim that "there are some exceptions but they will be remappable eventually".

Good Luck with it! If you find anything let us know

I am using a laptop keyboard at home with FN to the left, and an external keyboard at work, with CTRL to the left.

I have absolutely no problem whatsoever, and I never had any since day 2 or so. You will get adjusted to it very quickly, and even to the two different layouts, you can imagine a little switch in your brain that flips when you switch the keyboards. :) It won't take more than a day or two to get used to it and develop this switching reflex.

You'll need to remap it through the BIOs, meaning a hacked BIOs, as the FN button doesn't respond as a normal key in Windows. I've followed this for a while, the past year, but so far nothing. It doesn't effect me at all neither, but was an interesting topic.

I kinda like the FN there, since my pinky curls to the CTRL key, and I would need to stretch to hit the FN key.

I use about 3 keyboards on a daily basis but, as mentioned above, each one sort of registers in my mind separately and I rarely find the differences to be an issue.

Just give it some time, you'll get use to it ;)

    Cheers.
