I have an A8Ja, which is identical to the A8Jm, but with an x1600. Intel Pro/Set had issues with "applying profiles", so I use windows to manage my wireless connection, and everything works fine.

Question: Can I remove the annoying Pro/Set utility and still use the wireless on/off button on the laptop? I tried this and the button stopped working until I reinstalled pro/set.

    Thanks.

to my knowledge, you need the pro/set to use the wireless light and button. I just sacrificed that to use windows because the pro/set was like 3 extra things on my systray. Just disable your wireless with your mouse, no biggie =).

****... Ok, so here's the breakdown for my buttons:

    Power4Gear: Abandoned for NHC
    Bluetooth: Not available
    Wireless: Can't use
    Splendid: useless
    Instantfun(?): doesn't do anything

    Can I reconfigure my buttons?

Incidentally, does anyone know why pro/set keeps telling me it has problems applying my wireless profiles? I'd rather not abandon it.

Also, the reason I want the wireless button is because I want to be able to save battery power. Does turning off the wireless connection via the system tray achieve the same battery saving effect?

Yes, turning off the wireless, (rightclick and disable) shuts off the wireless card teh same way as the fn+f2 doe). I wish i could reconfigure the buttons also but i think that would involve editing parts of the registry.

I don't understand those instructions. Can someone dumb them down for me please?

I got stuck on the "point the HControl registry entry to it if you want to use the WLAN Hotkey" part.

Ok, I solved the applying profiles problem. I went to the intel website and downloaded their newest generic proset software, and then upgraded my ATK hardware control driver. Intel proset works fine now, and I can still use the button. Yay.
