Is there a way to remove the ridiculous partition on the HDD without running the recovery disc? I'd even settle for keeping the partition but making it only 10-20 gigs instead of the 80 it comes at from the factory.

Try downloading the Gparted disc. It's a simple easy Linux powered partition disk that will allow you to make pretty much any edit you could ever want to your harddrive without any restrictions. The only thing you have to watch out for, is after changing any Windows partitions, the first time you boot Windows up it'll say its partition is corrupt (it's not), just follow the instructions by inserting your Install CD, and it'll fix it for you. Then, your all done. This is how I installed Ubuntu and limited Vista to 20 gigs, and then set up a shared partition.

I strongly recommend against removing the data partition. It is for keeping personal data. You should never keep personal data on your Windows partition. If you have problems with Windows you'll get headaches recovering it before you wipe it.

It is not ridiculous at all; what is ridiculous is the fact that it only gets 30-40% of the HDD, with the rest going to the Vista partition. Which immediately makes people put data on that partition, which as I said is wrong.

I'm 100% with EBE on this one. Keep your programs and data separate. In fact, I recommend increasing the size of the data partition.

I guess I should have noted that I bought an external HDD for data which is why I want to get rid of the partition. I really have no need for it. Thanks for the suggestion Theros. I'll give it a try.

Aha, then it's ok. I also have an external, but I prefer not to lug it with me all around :)
