Hello everyone. This is my first ever attempt at this so sorry if this sounds like a dumb question to you more seasoned users. I have an Asus M6 Ne laptop and think I need to buy a replacement hard drive (it has the click of death and won't do anything other than make loud clicking noises). I'm hoping I can get a replacement and install it myself. The hard drive details are - Hitachi Travelstar 80GB Model HTS548080M9AT00, P/N 08K0639. My question is whether I need to match both of these numbers or is it sufficient if just the model number matches? Any other info as to how simple it would be to install would also be much appreciated.

Any 9.5mm ATA100/ATA133 PATA (not SATA) drive will work.

Yes, the only consideration moving to a higher RPM drive is that it will consume a little more power. It will be noticeably faster though. As long as the drive is 9.5mm high and PATA/IDE, it should fit your notebook.

The rest of the specs for the M6N are here, I think your region's model should be the same: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. - Notebooks- ASUS M6N/Ne
Good luck! -
Well, I finally received my new hard drive (although they sent me the 80GB 5400rpm despite me ordering the faster one so it will just have to do).
As I said, I want to have a go at installing this myself and was wondering if I could get some advice on how to go about it. Is it just a matter of putting the XP disc in followed by the recovery discs or is it more complicated than that?
Being a bit technologically challenged I probably shouldn't be attempting this myself but I've spent too much money in the past getting other people to supposedly 'fix' it and I just don't think it's worth spending any more money on. This is a last ditch effort to salvage it! -
Windows XP disc, let the installation work it's magic and either use the driver disc or get them from asus' website. As easy a that. If you can install MS office, you can install windows...
EDIT: I'm assuming your laptop came with two discs, one for windows and one for drivers like my N50. -
It came with the XP disc plus 2 recovery discs. Re the XP disc, I've read in a couple of places that I need to go into BIOS on start up and set it to start from the CD. Is that right or will it automatically start from the CD anyway given that there's nothing on the hard drive yet anyway?

It might not start from the CD, but you shouldn't have to go into bios. Usually it's press escape (repeatedly until a menu appears) when you boot and choose the dvd drive from the list. I would check in your manual which disc does what, it should be there. It's possible you have a disc for xp, one for the drivers and one that is an image of the original factory installation, or they could both be driver discs. The factory installation is what was on your laptop after you bought it, there's usually a few more programs that you don't necessarily want there but it will save you the trouble of installing the OS and then the drivers if you have it.

OK - thanks a lot. I'll check the manuals first and then give it a go. Fingers crossed!

Just another quick question based on a couple of things I've read - do I need to set up partitions on the hard drive, and if so, at what point, and how, would I do that?
Just realised that the XP set up disc prompts you to partition the hard drive so have done that. So far so good!
