So I'm 95% sure my hard drive on my ASUS is dying on me. Started with a BSOD, then an error msg claiming something is wrong with my boot loader. Used the Asus recovery, which runs but then still won't boot into windows. Used the downloadable Vista recovery CD to fix the boot problems, which will allow windows to load intermittently. Now I get an error on startup saying I need to verify Windows because a change had occurred. Verification then fails forcing me to log out.

So my question is, if I bought a similiar HD, can I just swap them out, run the ASUS recovery CDs and expect everything to work? I am well past my warranty, so I'd like to avoid RMAing if possible.

Yes I think the stock drives are 9.5mm height in the G1S, I'm not sure if 12.5mm will fit. Otherwise you can swap it out with whatever 2.5" SATA drive you'd like.

You might want to use the vista disc to run a chkdsk (disk check), it could just be filesystem corruption instead of a dying disk.

If you can boot into windows or use a linux livecd, see what is reported by SMART about the drive health.

I ran a chkdsk before and it did find things and fixed them, but then it still wouldn't boot. Another chkdsk would find things again and so on. The last chkdsk I did reported no errors, but my boot issues remained. I do not know what else it could be if the HDD is fine. Windows Memory test reported the memory is fine.

Ran SMART yesterday and it reported no problems. I'm going to try and run a full scan using Seagate's SeaTools tonight.

My concern with switching the HDD was just if the recovery CDs would work, or would it give me some error about not recognizing the original HDD.

You shouldn't have any problems with the recovery CDs and any hard drive.

Maybe your drive is going bad, but sometimes there are filesystem errors that chkdsk can't fix. Conversely there are definitely times where SMART doesn't warn about a disk that is definitely about to die.

    Good luck!
