Replacing the 320GB 5400RPM stock HDD for a 500GB 7200RPM. I noticed when I opened the HDD bay it seems to be fastened well into the computer. Im not sure if it will viod the warranty if I replace the HDD.

My lappy is only 2 months old and I want to make sure before I replace it. Anyone ever replace a HDD on a ASUS lappy? Are they all fastened in the bay like the F8Va? Any tips or guides out there?

    Thanks!

Yes, on many ASUS laptops the HDD is affixed to a caddy which in turn is fastened to the casing. Removing it will not void the warranty.

Make sure the 500GB will fit though; verify that it's not 12.5mm thick instead of the standard 9.5mm, and if it is thicker, make sure the F8 slot will take it. (I do not know what are the sizes of the 500GB 2.5 HDDs, I'm just letting you know so that you are aware of this aspect.)

I am not familiar with the F8 layout so I don't know.

I did the same upgrade in my F8Va. There is nothing special to this model. Open the HDD bay, take out the HDD with the caddy by pulling from the black strap in the opposite direction. There are a few adhesive sponges around the caddy to absorb the vibration. Don't worry about them, you can re-paste them later...

Any of the current 500gb hdd's will work, the 12.5mm drive was made by hitachi and was the first genereation of 500gb drive from that company.

the 500GB WD Scorpio Blue is a great drive, it is 5400rpm but very fast

5400rpm are supposed to be slower I think?

Many times not by a significant margin, especially if the 5400RPM HDD has a higher data density (i.e., is larger on the same amount of platters) than the latest 7200RPM drives, then it can get nearly the same performance.
